Does any gismo "convert" optical, from say an AE, into USB 1.1 or digital coax? My DAC does not accept optical input.

sure, there are a lot of optical to coax convertors out there. Check your usual cables/parts store. They seem to vary in price (all over the map) so you might want to investigate how well they convert the signal.

You didn't indicate which your existing DAC was - there are a variety of mid level priced units available that offer multiple digital inputs, along with line level input, headphone amp / preamp remote function. For folks looking for a lower piece count of boxes and interconnects, these could be a viable alternative as well.
