Waveguide Mod for the Emerald CS2
« on: 18 Sep 2008, 09:18 pm »
Have any Emerald CS2 owners considered adding a "Refractive Sound Plug" ala Dr. Geddes Summa design? In his white paper he states:

"Over the last several years Dr. Geddes has continued to work on ways to further
reduce the HOM in his waveguides. This has resulted in the Refractive Sound Plug or
RSP (™ and Patent Pending). This plug is made of very low density open cell
polyurethane foam. The idea is to absorb the HOM as they travel down the waveguide.
Since the HOM travel a longer path in the device than the axial wave, the HOM will
experience more sound attenuation in the foam than the axial wave. Further, since all
waveguides have some reflection at the mouth (a large radius will reduce this, but not
eliminate it) the RSP also helps to eliminate this standing wave. In essence the RSP
allows only the desired direct wave to propagate freely and effectively attenuates all other
waves. The result is a device that has significantly diminished all forms of internal
diffraction, resonance and HOM. This allows for a sound as natural as any piston source
yet possesses characteristics unobtainable by any piston type source."

I would also be very curious if Clayton had tried something similar. A "very low density open cell
polyurethane foam" plug would be fairly easy to try. It might require a xover adjustment too.

I'd love to see Clayton do this, but it would probably require licensing to Dr. Geddes.  It certainly might be worth it based on various visitors' response to the Summa demos.  I'm not sure what other implications there are for the XO, but with the DCX it's fairly simple to implement in the field once he determines  the changes needed.  There is also a lot of science to the reduction of HOM's in the waveguide itself, so it may be that the stock EP waveguide isn't ideal.  It will, however, be interesting to see what ideas he brings to RMAF this year, perhaps this one among them.

Another area that seems to be critical is the insertion point of the driver into the waveguide. I read somewhere that the PE waveguide might be able to use some improvement in that area. I am not sure this speaker uses the same identical part, but something to look into...

Clayton should be debuting his new CS1 model at RMAF.

Based on what I know, it is a must hear!

4 - 15 inch drivers per side and rumor has it that Clayton is using the BMS 4550 or 4552ND compression driver. Not sure what he is using for the waveguide (maybe 15-inch?). I also heard he has replaced the Behringer with a better unit.

This is all hearsay BTW - large grain of salt included. Maybe Clayton will clarify here.
