Hello,

I am having a custom one of a kind preamp built, so, with a tinge of regret, I am judging to see if there is interest on a refurbished Audio Research SP-12.

The unit is a five tube, 6DJ8 based preamp. Three tubes are for th phono section, while the other two are for the line stage.

The unit was extensively refurbished last summer by a local technician who does first class work. The upgrades are as follows:

1) All new caps and resistors for both the phono stage and line stage.
2) All new/upgraded caps for the power supply. There is roughly 10 times the original storage capacity in the power supply.
3) New connectors for most inputs and outputs.

The amp will come with Phillips NOS 6DJ8 tubes in the phono section (very quiet), and Amperex 6DJ8 (frame getter) in the line stage.

I have a host of 6DJ8 types, so if you want an extra set, let me know.  Might be able to assist.


Base price is 700.00 with tubes listed. You will not find a better sounding preamp with the features and sound quality anywhere. Given all the work that was done, it's like a buying a year old unit which was recently burned in.

Price includes a spare set of tubes (2 Sylvania 7308 for line stage and three Phillpis 6DJ8 NOS for the phono (Japan 70's - A nice quiet tube)

The refurbished work alone was well over 500.00. This SP-12 sounds better than the stock Audio Research SP-6E I used to own back in the day.

The SP-12 is basically the same topology as the highly regarded SP-10 in a single chassis.  With the re-furbished power supply, the cap storage was increased ten fold. 

A very nice sounding preamp (especially at this price).

I'll post a couple of pics next weekend on this guy. The unit is easily 8 out of 10 cosmetically, and better than new electrically. The power supply has been beefed up by a factor of 10, and all caps/resistors have been replaced with component better than the original.

You cannot go wrong at this price!!

It took a long time to get, but my new preamp has finally arrived, so time to move this puppy.

This baby is a great sounding full function preamp, and with the upgrades, sounds better than when it was new.
