PMC AML1 - adding a sub
« on: 19 Sep 2008, 08:05 am »
Hi,

After a long and harduous journey I have ended up with a system that I am very happy with and consists of:  Apple Mac Mini > Lavry DA10 > PMC AML1 speakers.  I now have to move my system into a larger room and I'm missing a touch of bottom end bass 'grunt'.

I've been considering adding a sub to the AML1's and PMC recommend the SB100 passive to partner the AML1's.

My question is:  Other that a PowerPack amp for the SB100 do I need a crossover such as the Bryston 10B to make this work?

Cheers,

Monty

Hi Monty,

Well sir you are taking on the hardest issue in hi-fi - integrating a sub.

The SB100 is a PASSIVE sub with no built in amp or crossover so integrating it will require an amplifier and a crossover network.  The PP300 is a great match and the 10B gives you termendous 'flexibility' (which you need) in order to get the proper crossover point and roll-off slope in your room.

Thanks James for taking the time to reply - okay so PowerPack amp, crossover and sub and I'm sorted?  Any pitfalls I should be aware of by following this route?

No pitfalls other than make sure you try different combinations of slopes and crossover points as every room is different. Also order the 10B SUB version.  In the picture on the left the 10B sub is in the center between the 28B's in my setup at home.

Thanks James,

One more question - can I add two subs using 10b?
