Bryston SP3 - Suddenly no sound!!!
« on: 14 Apr 2020, 10:07 pm »
Hi All,

First post here and hoping for some help from fellow SP3 owners.

We were watching a film earlier using the SP3. Once finished I switched inputs to stream from my Antipodes Solution via an Aqua DAC and there was no music. I checked whether it was on mute etc but everything seemed ok.

I switched everything off and on and again the same issue. I tried different inputs and still nothing. I have even tried the test noise and nothing.

I have since logged in the SP3 remotely to check "status" for any errors and there are none.

I then started thinking it was an issue with the power amp, however the sub isnt getting a signal either so that cant be the issue.

The only thing that I have now seen, is when starting the SP3 up, the first message on the screen says "HDMI board failed! unprogrammed or not installed!" Now, I dont have the new HDMI boards fitted, I only have the original HDMI board for sound, so not sure if this is telling me I have an issue or not?

Its all very strange and wondered if anyone else had experienced the same?

Thanks for reading

Be safe

Bill

I don’t,but I’m happy as hell my old Arcam Av-8(2006) has been Perfect.
Have ha a couple DACs that have FKD up,
Almost seems that gear that was made years ago was more dependable,
Least I have found that, whether digital or analog.
Have had a few pieces(Digital) that has totally screw up,won’t say which one.
Why is it that newer digital gear fucks up or has FKN multiple hiccups, yet older digital like my Av-8 is Flawless.
Cheap parts, shooting things out to fast for the mighty dollar, lack of Quality control.
Have had that happen in amplifiers, screws flying around inside the amps, yet company denies it,couldn’t possibly happen they, yet when got replacements even my audio store heard the tinkling when we opened the boxes and turned the amps upside down,
End of new gear Rant.

Sorry to hear this.  It certainly seems as audio products become more sophisticated reliability takes a hit.  I have been rocking my SP2 for over a decade with nary a hitch.  I have almost purchased an SP3 on several occasions and entertained the SP4 but I don’t know it I am willing to trade reliability for “the next level”.  Sounds like it may require a trip back to Bryston.

Bill - I've had some experience with this issue. Some while ago, I had my SP3 HDMI board updated.  Going from memory here, so hopefully recalling the sequence of events correctly.

After the update, the issue you mention occurred fairly frequently, but was clearly intermittent. It was driving me crazy, especially as once the problem occurred, no audio input would pass audio.

The problem was moderated very significantly by a version of firmware provided by Stan. I say moderated because the issue does repeat still every once in a long while, but not enough to be as big an issue. Perhaps once in 40 turn ons from standby, as a guess.

I've rigged up an extension power cord so as to make it easy to do a hard power reset when necessary.

Email Mike, but also make sure to check the firmware version that your unit is running, and provide them with that info, along with the serial number of your SP3.

My JBL SDP-45 (rebranded Bryston SP3) now has the same issue (HDMI board failed! unprogrammed or not installed!)
:(

Did anyone of you manage to find any other fix other than hard power cycling?
Service center here is still closed as well due to COVID.

Thanks all.

This happens to me about one or two times a year. Sometimes it will not switch inputs and sometimes there is no sound. The remedy is always to reboot.
