Cement Basement Floor
« on: 26 Aug 2008, 10:25 pm »
New sound room continues to take shape.
I went with sconces for lighting.

Now ready to tackle the floor. My old room in the basement had a medium grade carpet pad and a high-traffic thin carpet. I know it's a mistake, but my speakers were on stands that simply sat on the floor. Just before my basement flooded, I happened to get near the floor in front of the speakers and I'll be dipped (as they say in Michigan) if the carpet surface wasn't actually radiating music. And LOUDLY!!!

Anyway, I'll get carpet spikes this time.

What is the best recommendation (or link to prior thread) for wall-to-wall carpeting on a cement basement floor? Could also do other surfaces if necessary sonically.

Thanks,

Paul

We went with a Berber in our basement. Wears like iron and it's low pile, so an occasional vacuum is about all that's needed. Yes, there is a pad beneath it.

Enjoy,

Well, if you are going with 'wall to wall' carpeting and you still have the possibility of flooding, I (personally) would use carpet squares. They are typically 18" square and have a rubber backing. No need to glue them down (in most instances) as the rubber backing holds them in place fairly well. Nice part is you can install these yourself. All you need is a heavy pair of shears or a heavy duty paper cutter (like you use in an office) to cut and trim your squares around the perimeter of your room.

With the squares, if you ever flood again they come up fairly easy so you can take them outside to dry and also suck up the water on the floor. On occasion I flood too. Me, I use area rugs on my basement (concrete) floor so its easy to roll them up and get them out of the way for clean up. It is a pain but I now have everything up off the floor so it doesn't get soaked when it happens. My amps are on 2" thick maple butcher blocks, stands and speakers all have spikes. Heck, I've even got my power cords and interconnects elevated.

You might think about installing a water sensor too. Mine is tied into my homes alarm system. Last time I flooded Brinks woke me up in the middle of the night with a phone call to let me know water was coming in. It saved me hours and hours of extra cleanup. You should be able to do a stand alone model with a transformer, the sensor and an audible alarm. There are several home automation sites that will have all the parts you need.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies.
In 11 years of living in this house we never had any flooding. The rains in June were incredibly intense, more than long term residents have ever seen.

We had a French drain system installed, two sump pumps with a third battery backup pump with alarms. Had the walls incorporated with a deflective shield that goes into the drain system. The floor has been treated and sealed.

So, while nothing is perfect or guaranteed (actually this system is guaranteed against flooding), we are not expecting another flood anytime soon...Therefore, wall-to-wall is going in.

When I do my basement I'm putting down DriCore subflooring.

Keeps the floor a little warmer, allows the concrete to breathe, and any minor water leaks won't affect the flooring.

Haven't decided what flooring I'm using.  Thinking wood lamanate flooring.

I've heard if you have a reflective floor it's good to have an absorbant ceiling.

So, Laminate flooring with dropped ceiling OR carpet with drywall ceiling.
