Noisy Candela

All,

I wanted to get the opinon of some if the Odyssey gurus on this board. I recently got a Candela and Mono Extrememe SEs about a month ago. I have been buring them in for the past two weeks and they have close to 500 hours on them. Unfortunatley, all of the sudden a fairly load crackling noise is coming through both speakers. I have isolated this to the Candela unit. I tried swapping the tube positions in the preamp but it made no difference. Running the unit with one tube in either socket produces the noise. Could I have two bad tubes in such a new unit or is something else likely the problem? The Candela was very quiet when it first arrived and this crackling is loud enough to hear over music during soft passages. I have not heard back from Alex G yet so I wanted to throw out the question for suggestions here.

Thanks,

Rick

does the crackling still occur but switch channels when you swap the tubes? Is it coming from both channels regardless?

Yes, I have.  I no longer have the Candella, but when I did, my internet connection (broadband) was somehow interfering with the Candella.  It really became apparent when I would surf the internet, or when I would download something while listening to two channel.   FYI, I have a Mac Mini (connected to my TV) and Mac router which reside in the same room as as my two channel rig (two channel and HT share the same room).

Since I have a Slimdevices Transporter which relies on the network to operate, I had a constant problem.  YMMV, but this was my experience in my home and my room.

The crackling appears in both channels. I have not make any changes to the system and it don't use wireless internet or a router in the area, etc.

Thanks,

Rick

Two questions/recommendations:

1.  Check your amp to Candela cable connections, I had both come slightly loose and had a buzz.
2.  Are both tubes very bright, rather than the normal minor glow?  If so, change your tubes and see what happens.
3.  Call Klaus.

I've only had the buzz with loose connections so far, once tightened up everything no problems.

I ran into a hum once, and it was from a cable laying ontop of the main output cable.

Sounds to me like a resistor, maybe in PS if heard in both channels. Easy fix.  :thumb:

All,

I wanted to thank everyone for the good advice given in this thread. I found the issue last night. It was not a problem with the Candela itself but an issue with my Infrared extender which was plugged into the same circuit. The device must add some noise to the line because the crackling disappeared when I unplugged it. I wanted to give thanks to Alex G as well for being extremely helpful with the troubleshooting. Odyssey is a top flight company to deal with!

Nice to have dedicated circuits for your gear, you lose so many nasties. Maybe something for Santa to consider this Christmas...
