Looking for a used OPPO
« on: 24 Sep 2008, 11:30 pm »
I see more and more stuff coming out on Blu Ray but I can't bring myself to purchase the most affordable good Blu Ray player known to me because of the less than the best performance on upscaling regular DVD's (of which I have a number) based on what I've been able to read.  So, video fans, I'm hoping one of you might part with your OPPO 981HD.  Thanks.

That's like asking someone to part with their beautiful convertible that gets great gas mileage and is low maintenance!

I expect you're right tho with the advance of BluRay maybe some viewers may care to upgrade.  Cheers.

The Oppo BluRay unit should be available soon! So lots of used 981HD's may become available.

Contact OPPO direct via email or phone and ask them about any factory refurb units available.  I live in the SF Bay Area and drove over to Mountain View and bought a unit directly last year.

don't you want a 980H or 983H, Jim?

Thanks, Cliffy.  Russ, the latest one is quite a jump in price but I would love a quote on a used one.  The 981HD has that Farouda chip for movies that I've often read good things about.  I'm a novice at this.  Any suggestions?

Hi Jim,

I needed to get a dvd player for my stepdad's birthday and after using the 981 at my mother in laws house I decided on the same unit for him.  I looked and considered a used one.  Since it was a gift I decided to pay full price for a new one and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

While I am firmly rooted in the Bluray camp having enjoyed the PS3 since it came out the Oppo players are amazing and on their own level for value.

The 983 is a significant step up in performance.  It depends what you plan to do with this player.

I would say get a used 981 on ebay or Agon and then get ready for Oppo's Bluray player when it comes out.  From what I understand it will include the Anchorbay technology for state of the art standard definition dvd playback and will add bluray technology.  I respect Oppo's approach by waiting with bluray and will hopefully release a refined bluray player.

I will probably get one as soon as they are available to replace my PS3 if it is as good as I expect.  I have owned and used several different Oppo models.  They are all great.

The 983 is worth the extra money as the build quality and features are even better than their previous products.

I think you would be safe to get a 981 or 983.  Odds are you would be able to recoup a good amount of what you paid if you decide to buy their bluray player later.

You may also decide to just move it to another system in your house if you have more than one dvd/display setup.

Best of luck in your search.
