Changing Firmware (v15) on ReadyNAS NV+
« on: 28 Jun 2008, 04:53 pm »
Hi all,

I am considering a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ for storing my FLAC-based music catalogue.
Today I am using an old PC with Linux, noisy, generates lot of heat, needs maintenance, requires lots of space etc etc...
NAS seems like a great alternative. But - there's one problem.

I am using a Bolder Cables-modified Squeezebox 3, thus I need to have version 15 of the Firmware installed at the server / SqueezeCenter.

Is that possible on the ReadyNAS NV+? If so, how is that done?
Can't find it in the manuals, which gives me a bad feeling about this.
Has anyone tried it?

Many thx in advance!

Mats,

It is possible, but I forget exactly how to do it so hopefully somebody else will chime in with specific instructions.

However, once installed, you will probably also want to make sure that new versions of slimserver/slimcenter don't overwrite it and in order to prevent that there is a small patch that you have to get from the slim support forums that leaves the firmware in place when you change server versions.

Problem is that all of my notes on this, what it's called, how to install it, etc. are on a hard drive I extracted from my former, now dead, computer, and I still have to retrieve all that data.  So, while I know it can be done, at this point I can't offer any more than this.

BTW, hope you have a place to put your ReadyNAS where you won't hear it as it is anything but quiet :-).  I have mine in an open closet about 8 feet away from me and it's driving me nuts.  I will be relocating it to a closet under the stairs, but I have to finish running the CAT-5 first.

Thanks, Jim!

It feels good knowing that the ReadyNAS has this functionality.
Pls - anyone - if You have more info regarding how to do this, kindly post that info.

Regarding noise - I read someware that the NV+ has been improved so that it is less noisy than the NV.
Also, it just can't make any more noise than my current linux server  :x :)

Thx again!

Cheers  / mats_rickard

Is anyone using the Netgear ReadyNAS with Firmware v15?

I found some topics on Netgears forum, but they seem dated, posts are from 2006 and those were the "infrant" readynas days...

Is there still an "update" function named "Frontview -> System -> Update -> Local Update"?

If so, have anyone here with BC-modded players used it (with success)?

Please help!!!

Mats,

Firmware version 15 isn't supported by Slim Devices any longer. The latest versions do offer more features and sound very good. I am very happy using SlimCenter.

You may want to try upgrading the software to SlimCenter and see how that works for you. You can always uninstall it.

If you cannot easily reverse the polarity of your speaker cables to keep the phase correct, please contact me. I do have a test product to correct that problem.

Thanks Wayne for Your reply.
Also, thanks to jrebman.

However, I still have some more questions. Maybe I just don't understand how the entire chain works. Sorry bout the confused questions  :)

But Firmware newer than version 15 have inversed polarity, right? And since I am using a BC-modded squeezebox together with other sources (a turntable and a DVD) I need to have the same polarity = which means I am stuck with version 15? Or am I missing something?

I am already using SqueezeCenter (with firmware v15) on my Linux server. Works great.
But the reason I am asking is that I want to _replace_ my linux server with a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+.
It will give me a neater, smaller, safer, more quiet solution which is easier to fit in my home. It will also consume less energy and generate less heat.

So - I want to know if (and how) I can use a ReadyNAS _with_ SqueezeCenter and firmware version 15.
Or - how to solve the polarity thing with newer firmwares.

If it doesn't work, then I am stuck with my noisy old Linux server .

Since my Squeezebox isn't the only source component, I need to have the same polarity on all source components.
I do not want to switch speaker cables each time I select another source component (e.g. from Squeezebox to turntable).

How is that accomplished with a firmware > version 15?

Sorry about my confused questions, but I guess I don't understand how to solve this problem.

Best regards :) / mats_rickard
