I have read this forum since January when I started to get back into two channel audio. Audio Circle and Roger Modjeski in particular have been very helpfull to me, so I thought I might contribute my experience for whatever it is worth. I bought a pair of Merlin speakers and NAD electronics over twenty years ago, to hear music the way it was intended to be heard. With kids and whole house sound I stored the Merlins for a few years. Now with my last one off to college I have claimed the downstairs for listening.
I took my B&K amp and tuner off my whole house system and hooked up the Merlins. With one of my tweeters not working I started to look into my options and see if I could have a little fun. When the speaker shop guy started talking about replacing all the drivers and crossovers I decided to make my move into bi-amping and to one of those new/old SET amps. I have emailed back and forth with Bobby Palkovic at Merlin and talked to his head factory guy. I have had probably five phone conversations with Roger at Music Reference and I have had a blast doing it. I am by no means an audio electronics expert. All of these people have been friendly and helpful. Roger could have sold me more stuff but he was clearly more interested in helping me put together what I really needed for good sound.
I have always considered myself a music lover as apposed to an audiophile, you know, listen to the music not the equipment. But there's no getting around the fact that the system equipment and set up counts big time. With an EM7 bi-amped into it, my system is now more clear sounding. The vocals and instruments have a better presence. I have a volume control with the external crossover that affects the woofers to get the blend of highs and lows that I want. It took some effort and patience, but what the heck...this is all about fun for me. I've also made the move to computer audio with a Bolder modified Squeezebox and the sound is so good I may leave all my LP's in storage. Or, maybe I'll get them out down the road.
All in all I feel like it has been money well spent and a lot of good sound for the dollar. Thanks.
