I can't even remember the last time I rented a DVD (and I rent a LOT of them) that had a DTS option. What the hell happened? Used to be that every once in a while I'd get to listen to a DTS track. Why aren't as many discs offering this option anymore??

They're still around but not as often as I'd like. I've probably had 5/6 DVD's w/ a DTS option this year but I rent over 20 DVD's a month. It's a real shame cuz DTS is so much better quality than DD it's ridiculous.

Exactly....I'd get so excited when I'd find a DTS option on the disc...even my pre/pro is like, "dude, wtf?"

In addition to the movies I purchase, we also subscribe to Netflix. The wife and I watch about 3-4 movies a week and I can't remember the late time I saw the DTS option in a menu.
It has gotten to the point where the wife just rolls her eyes (in jest) when I go to a menu and appear dissapointed when there's not DTS.
Certain movies I can see not having the option (chick flicks), but dammit man. I bought the entire Harry Potter collection, and not a fricken' one of 'em has any audio options.
Spoken language is NOT an audio option (IMO).   
Certain types/genres of movies you expect various options.

Is Hollywood going the way of RIAA?
Are we as a society content with what they're feeding us, so they figure, "why bother"? 

AND........WHY at the end of the credits is the DTS logo displayed on THE VAST MAJORITY of movies, but alas, there's no option?
How's that work?

Didn't The Golden Compass have a DTS option? I can't remember but I do know that i just recently watched a movie in DTS ES. My memory just ain't worth squat, a result of bad "life choices". aa

I was noticing this recently as well.  What's more, I have had a PS3 hooked to my system for about 4 months now, I also have NetFlix with BR being the default.  Not one BR movie has had a DTS option .  Too bad, I feel theat DTS is superior to DD, at least with my system it is.

WHAT........... I've been on the fence with getting a PS3 (I can say it's for the family after all  ) and I had assumed that BR would have all the bells and whistles.
Disappointing to hear Ed.

I have owned both HD and a PS3 for some time now and I would say you can sleep easy knowing the PS3 will sound very very good with the new, and old movies. I just watched Blade Runner last night and it was stunning.

I went back and checked, both Juno and Before the Devil Knows you're Dead were in DTS on BR.  So was Jumpers which I watched the other night, so there are at least a few DTS BR movies out.  Regardless, as Savjac mentioned, the PS3 does a nice job with both BR and standard DVDs.  In fact, if a movie is not on hard drive (which I watch using Theatertek on my HTPC), I use the PS3 to watch it.  BTW, the PS3 can be used to play games too !

Yea, I'm "this" close to getting a PS3. But other projects keep sucking the cash from my wallet. 
Good to know there's some DTS on BD though. I just wish it were more prevalent on "regular" DVD's.

Seems a lot of the Blu-ray movies I've been buying recently include a DTS HD Master Audio soundtrack which contains a 1.5M DTS core (same as for the best of DVD DTS)  for systems without DTS HD MA decoding capability. DTS HD MA is "lossless" audio which (in theory) decodes to the original uncompressed PCM soundtracks which blows away any of the lossy (DD/DTS) codecs. Similar situation with properly decoded Dolby Digital TrueHD.  I expect that eventually the vast majority of Blu-ray discs will have either Uncompressed PCM and/or DTS HD MA and/or Dolby TrueHD sound tracks.  My first rule is: don't buy anything without lossless/uncompressed audio tracks; I might make the occasional exception for a "gottahave" movie for which the audio was never going to be very good in the first place.

I've pretty much given up on DVD and it's lossy DD/DTS soundtracks (not to mention low resolution video).  If you like DTS, you will probably love (properly decoded) DTS HD MA.

Yes, the "DTS is better than Dolby Digital" arguments are slowly sinking in the sunset as both vendors accommodate 24/192 lossless soundtracks with their HBR codecs (DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby trueHD).  There is no difference once decoded (think apple lossless and flac, for lack of a better comparison, both decoded to 24/96 wav).  The real differences are then going to occur on the back-end post-processing of 5.1 soundtracks to 7.1 (THX Ultra 2, DPLIIx-with-TrueHD, etc.).  Of course, once everything is moved to native 7.1 we have lossless unprocessed again.  Then we move to 10.2......
