tube preamps...diy kits, etc.

anyone here using Bottlehead line or stage preamps?
what about Hagerman?
Do they have lots of character/coloring or are they pretty neutral sounding?

I know the time is going to come for me to want to upgrade my phono preamp and most likely my line stage too.
it seems the most bang for the buck will come from DIY tube kits.

Another cheaper option would be finding a Dynaco PAS-3 or something.
How would this compare to Bottlehead/hagerman/Decware* kits?

*decware just released a tube line stage kit that i'm pretty interested in, and a phono stage is supposed to coming soon but i'm not sure how soon...

I'm only interested in tube pre's right now because my speakers are inefficient...so i'm thinking i'll just keep the SS power amp (adcom gfa-1a dual monoblock type thing...with lots of power  aa )

Transcendence Audio (I don't really know how to spell it) has what looks to be a pretty good tube pre kit.  Anyone here have any experience with it?

I built a Transcendence Grounded Grid kit a while back and it went together without any problems or issues (was really well documented).  It was my first foray into building any electronics from a kit (previously had only done speaker kits).  I wouldn't characterize the sound as typical (old fashioned) tube though.  It was very clean, quiet, fast, and detailed and had very tight and powerful bass with no bloat or boom.  It was not rolled off in the highs and did a very fine job with sound staging (very 3D).  It was relatively immune to tube rolling, although you could get the midrange fleshed out a bit more by using NOS tubes.

IMHO you can't beat this deal with a stick ! The octal base tube is known for being the best preamp tube around...I built them all, all have their strengths and weaknesses, but why bother if you can buy the Cary for this price...
Just my 2 cents... :thumb:
