Help me improve this MTM enclosure!!!
« on: 6 Dec 2010, 08:22 pm »
Ok so I have these EMP EF30s they are RBH audio's ID brand.  They sound pretty good but I do like to tinker, so out of curiosity I opened them up to see how well they were built.  As it turns out they have no cross bracing, and the mdf is not 3/4 more like 1/2 so I would like to brace them up.  Also the sound control inside is that white poly stuff you see below.  What would you do to improve these.  Would you add some cross bracing maybe some dowels so as not to change enclosure too much?  How about some VCT lining and some acoustic foam?

Danny offers No-Rez which is an excellent product. I have av123 ELT525 towers which also have thin cabinets, & the No-Rez helped tremendously (along w/ Skiing Ninja's excellent xover upgrades).

I have also used No-Rez in my Rythmik/ GR Research servo sub.  It really is excellent stuff.

So just add dampening, no bracing?

I'll defer to the DIY speaker experts re: how many braces would be kosher, but the No-Rez does not subtract from the internal volume.  Too much internal wood/ mdf mods could eat up volume & be detrimental to the o/a sound.

Wow those cabinets are cheaply built!  I can only imagine how much coloration they add.

You seriously need to add a ton of bracing, but bracing has to be in tight to be effective.  Either cut pieces about 1/32" oversize and tap into place with a hammer, or do something like - cut your brace about 1/4" oversize, then cut it in half with a miter cut.  So you end up with 2 pieces like:

-----------   ----------------
              /  /
----------  ------------------

Then when you put them in place put glue and a clamp on the miter cut, the clamp will slide the two pieces down and outward ... putting tension on the walls.

Or even better, sell them and put the funds toward a kit from GR and build some decent cabs.

You could add some braces like this:

It is made from strips of MDF with the edges routered off of them. This will give you the most bracing for the least amount of air space taken up. This is cheap and and it is easy to fit them in through the woofer holes.

Then go in an line it with No Rez.

I've decided to brace with dowels.  I think I will drill holes through back and push dowel through to front baffle that way I can get it in tight and not affect looks too much.  I will probably add res/sound control as well.

Question:  what will the lost volume do for
The enclosure tuning and driver rolloff?  I already crossover ~20hz above their +\-3db point......
