Being a new owner of this Dodd preamp, I can certainly agree with the reviewer's conclusion. This piece is a gem, PERIOD.

I've been used to putting up the "revealing nature" of my setup, which consists of Tact preamp into Moscode 401HR into Salk HT3 speakers. I have long accepted that my system sounds absolutely fantastic on good recordings but intolerable on bad recordings. I bought into the notion that "the best preamp is not to use any preamp" and we need to keep the signal shortest from our source to the speakers.

But inserting this preamp between my Tact and the Moscode 401HR changed my perception completely. It add so much "air", "juice", and "meat" to my good recordings, cymbals/bass now have better attack & transient, when I listen to Brian Bromberg's "Wood", I could literally feel "smoke" coming out of each string note. I was never impressed with the quality of Luther Vandross's "Songs" album, but the Dodd preamp changed all that, last night when I listened to the song "Killing me softly", it sounded so good that I wouldn't leave my chair even if someone threaten to kill me.

The most important thing is, I no longer have to put up with my bad recordings. The "air" makes my poor classical recordings sounded BIGGER than ever and now I feel like sitting in the concert hall.

I often used the target curves/room-correction features of the Tact preamp to overcome the weakness in some of the recordings. For example, if the female vocal is too harsh, I would roll-off the high frequency to tone it down, if the bass is too loose/lack of control, I would adjust the bass response to make them sound tight and punchy.

Now, with the insertion of this preamp, I do not need the room-correction features of the Tact, I just switch the Tact to "bypass", ie. no correction at all, and just happily listen to all kind of recordings. Whatever kind of music I threw at it, it just makes them sing. On a few tracks (Patricia Barber's "Gotcha"), I do find that the bass be too strong but I fix it by opening my door to let some bass escape and then it sounded just perfect.

This coming weekend I will try to borrow an $18k BAT REX preamp to do a shootout. aa

So, in short, I am a very happy owner. Congratulation to Mr. Dodd for inventing such a fine product.

YMMV of course. :thumb:

 CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT REVIEW GARY!!!!!
For the record, I've designated your preamp as the "Franchise Player" in my system and as such I'll run it till the wheels fall off and then I'll ask you to make me another one.  Thanks for delivering such a high end component at such a reasonalbe price! :thumb:

Great review. How would you Dodd experts advise adding a headphone amp with this battery pre, since there is no tape loop? Would you be losing any sonic quality by using one of the RCA inputs? Or might Gary add a tape loop as an option?

Thanks James :thumb:
Sorry, there is no easy way to use a HP amp with this pre, but I just may have a tube HP amp in the works running on batteries of course! :green:

I'm also a new proud owner of this fine preamp :inlove:

A lot of great things have already been written here about this pre, making it hard to be original with text.

So, I'll keep it short and say that for me, the Dodd is a keeper.

I will say what jumped out at me from the start were the voices, and the space between the instruments.  The soundstage and detail are also fantastic.   The first tune I fired up was Starz by Sara K.  Hearing Sara's voice for the first time through the Dodd will leave an unforgetable memory.  So clean, precise and pinpoint.  And the guitar... oh my!!  Within the first few seconds of listening my eyes opened up wide, and I said "WOW"! outloud.   Sounds corny, but it's true.  I knew I had a winner here.  .

On some recording I really am hearing subtle detail that I never heard before.  Things like a chair squeak, floor creak, a singer swallowing, artists breathing, taps of the trumpet keys, and other numerous instrumental details that were unheard before.

Me happy!!  :thumb:  :thumb:

Barry, did you have a chance to listen to the $18k BAT REX preamp yet?

In my system,

Dodd preamp + Moscode 401HR >>>>>>> BAT REX + BAT-VK150 Monoblocks  aa aa aa

The BAT's sounded a little "thicker" in the midrange, just.....a little smoother, the high is less lively and sparkling than the Dodd. The Dodd brings out a lot of details but it never sounded harsh and edgy.

At the end of the day, what sealed it for me is the difference in bass between the two setups. The BAT's - surprised surprised - have rather weak & uninspiring bass; whereas, I can feel my bones rattling when listening to the Dodd + Moscode.

I LOVE my Dodd Pre-amp.  :thumb:

It's about time someone reviewed it.  I'm real happy to read the opinions on the Amperex tubes too.  I have both them and the Telefunkens.  I've been running them with the Tele's because they cost more (good logic huh) but my mind keeps telling me that the Amperex sound better.  The Telefunkens sound a bit dry.  As soon as I wake up this morning the Amperex are going back in.

Hey Gary, does mine (Larry M.) have all the batteries going at the same time like he says in the review? I've had no issues or anything.  Just curious.  I'm always cognizant of flipping back and forth session to session to share the load.

One of the most impressive things about the amp is the box it comes in.
