Level adjustment on 4B SST Pro
« on: 15 May 2008, 02:21 am »
I have the above model and was wondering when and why the level switch would be used.  Those that have used this feature I would love to hear why and what you experienced in doing so.

I've searched the Bryston section to no avail.

Thanks

HI,

The level controls are not generally used in a consumer application.  The amp will sound better if they are fully clockwise.  That's why I recommend the consumer version of the amps for home use.

Pro applications sometimes require the fine volume adjustments when calibrating their speaker systems.

Hi James,

What makes the amp sound *worse* if these level controls are used please? :?:

Hi,

I do not think the word 'worst' would necessarily apply. It is just the fact that the gain controls are in the circuit path and my philosophy has always been 'less is better'.

Thank you for the answer to my question.

I do hope that your not implying that the additional circuit compromises the performance of the amp!  I understood that the Pro and C SSTversions were identical, except for the level control feature?  If the level is set to 0, which it is, does that mean the circuit has been neutralized?

Thanks,
Alan

James , that concept applies to other areas as well. For example, on a guitar, a tone control can be set to 10 (maximum). However, if the actual tone control is removed or bypassed, there are actually more highs. Even on 10, the presence of the tone control does attentuate some highs by the very nature of the control itself. Again, different concept...but somewhat similar in the that path is actually more pure with the control actually out of the line.

Hi Alan,

A gain control is an L-Pad so there is a small resistance as a result. If turned up fully there should not be much of a difference though.
