PC Volume Control Help
« on: 6 May 2008, 06:12 pm »
Hi folks, i have my PC computer hooked up to my usb dac>stereo.  I turned it on yesterday and have very limited volume coming out.  All connections are ok so it must be some type of cpu setting.  I suspect this because none of the internal volume controls on the pc work. E.g. mute and volume slider have no effect on the sound.  Any thoughts as to what this is? Other then its annoying...

Check the volume settings on Windows media player;  I had the same problem.

Have you tried ASIO4ALL with your DAC? This free USB driver completely bypasses Windows drivers for much better sound quality. The computers volume controls are also bypassed by ASIO4ALL so volume is now controlled by the stereo, as it should be. Foobar2000 is the media player I use.

Check the levels on the advanced controls which you can get to by doubling clicking the speaker icon.

If you are using a usb to dac connection then you are sending a digital stream to the dac.  Thus none of the analog controls will work (which is what you want).  Therefore the only way to adjust the volume is by using the volume control on you stereo.

Thanks all for the responses.  I have tried to adjust the volume slider on my cpu in the sounds menu.  Previously, the slider or the mute function did work, and i could also make adjustments on the analog volume control to the stereo.  something is now amiss on the cpu side as i can max out the signal on the amp and still not have enough volume whereas before i almost had too much gain.....

any further thoughts would be appreciated.
