My opp crapped out after 2.5 years. Left a little bad taste on the durability front.  I need a dvd player that will do 1080i and sounds good as a transport. Never loved the sound of the oppo as a transport to my dac-even with some mods. But and its a big one, the video was truly outstanding. So is oppo still the way to go on the dollar value front.  I really hesitate to buy another one as a disposable ....is there a comparable unit with better build quality, equal video and sound in or just above the oppo price range...pioneer elite? denon?

much obliged for any reccomendations

My recommendation is to stick with OPPO, especially for the money. You would have to spend more to get the quality. I've owned three other OPPO players besides the new DV-983H that I just purchased and never had a problem. Remember, if you don't like the OPPO 983, you can return it within 30 days.

I would recommend something like a Toshiba sd-5000 at <$70 for a very versatile basic player, except that my video seems to have gone out. I also have an oppo, this one was for the bedroom.
