flagship model question
« on: 16 Oct 2003, 01:18 am »
This is my first visit to the teres page having moved over for a moment from the reference 3a Decapo i site. The teres is one of the most interesting contributions to turntable design that I have seen in the last 30 years which is no small feat if you consider just how many go's designers have had at it in that time span.My question is just what can be gained by introducing the new flag ship model or is this an exercise in bigger is better.Another way to put it would be to ask the question is a 30lb all wood platter superior to the same 20lb all wood platter and why if this is true why would'nt a 100lb all wood platter sound even better?I am not asking this question for the sake of being an asshole but to better understand the reason for the existence of this beautiful table. Thanks in advance.

Good questions.  The 340 is more than just bigger.  There is a lot more rigididty and damping in the design along with some major motor improvements.

The 37lb platter sounds significantly better. I can't fully explain why there is so much difference.  Some of it is simply due to the extra 10lbs of mass lending itself to better rotational stability.  I think that the platter thickness may also be an iimportant factor.  No doubt a 100lb platter would be even better.  It could be that at 100lbs we would be getting into diminishing returns. But going from 27lbs to 37lbs that clearly was not the case.

So the short answer is bigger is better, but the 340 is more than just bigger.

Teres 340 and other models in the Teres line
« Reply #2 on: 17 Oct 2003, 08:26 pm »
Chris,

With the exception of the 340, unless I am incorrect all the other Teres models are upgradable to higher models in the line.  I would assume that this would basically not be possible even going from the Teres 265 to the 340.  The only parts that seem to be the same between the 340 and the rest of the line appear to be the bearing, the spindle, and the record clamp.  Also, with the 340 I presume that a smooth spindle to accept a Sota Reflex clamp would be available, as I had asked in a PM for the other units in the line.

Actually the 340 bearing is also different.  It extends all the way to the shelf on the
bottom of the table.  A few of the smooth centering pins that work with a Sota
clamp are currently available but they are not standard.  Only while supplies last.

Chris

PS:  A new, much better sounding clamp made from Cocobolo will be available in the Dec/Jan
timeframe.
