First Impressions 28BSST's
« on: 14 May 2008, 03:15 pm »
After a long HT refit journey, my new HT system is finally coming together. Last nite got the chance to power up the main speakers with the 28's. Initially, the electronics couldnt decide which way it wanted to go, great at times, really ugly at times, and on and on for the first hour. Then, the CJ linestage seemed to settle down somewhat, the stage started to widen, deepen, musicians/vocalists started to take their places in the venue. The high's started to sweeten, amps really took over and put a hammer lock on the maggies. After a couple hours, the bass started to really tighten up, speakers started to dissappear and air started to surround the performers. I am a fan of concert DVD's. Last cut I listened to was Aerosmith/Dream on. about 1/2 way thru the song Steven Tyler is about 30 feet in front of the band on a runway. Brad Whitford and Joe Perry start walking out the runway playing behind Tyler. There were 2 distinct instruments and a vocalist in very close quarters. Tyler was localized out front, and 2 distinct guitar players next to each other behind him. 20 feet or so behind them are Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer. At this point 5 performers with very distinct seperation, no smear what so ever, plenty of air around each performer, and granted, the stage isnt 30 feet deep in my room, but a definite 4 different layers of depth. WOW, all this with a big plasma in the middle, getting the visual location of everything and hearing everyone exactly where they are on the screen. Granted I changed both the preamp and amps at the same time, but the equiptment that got replaced was not exactly low level, Levinson 33H's and a Krell surround processor, speakers and source are the same. I never heard some of this before with the previous equiptment.
I can see from the first impressions that this system is going to be extremely pleasurable, both on music and movies.
amplifiers have incredible sound at low volume, but seem to be able to rock with the best of them.
very very satisfied so far. can't wait to get the rest of the puzzle pieces up and running.

You know...all this talk of 28B SSTs is going to force me to consider them as a replacement amp later this year. Now I just need to try to hear 'em

I know I'm bragging but I have to say the 28B is a sonic masterpiece.

I do not think I have ever heard anything in this price range that will stay with the 28.
What I have heard lately that sounds anything like this is the Krell Evolution 600. But to compare a pair of $16,000 amps to $32,000 amps is not really a fair comparision. real value here in the 28's. After a couple hours last nite, it was like you were sitting 5th row center.
Numbers 4 and 5 are going to be very hard not to order. Should get the center channel up and going with its 28B this weekend. Could make for a interesting uncompressed blue ray experience later in the week.

I dont have mega bucks for amps unfortunately, but yes, "incredible sound at low volume" is a Bryston trademark.
One evening I was playing some music, the wife complained it was too loud, again, so I pressed the volume once, and the sound disappeared.....

I like how you said 'again'.....

As well, when you pressed the volume once, did the sound of the music disappear, the sound of your wife complaining disappear...or both

But I agree with you. I do most of my listening at low volumes and the dynamics are there with the Bryston amps. I find they don't need to be wound up at all to perform. I'm sure the 28Bs are a notch above.,..the the rest of the SST line is likely no slouch :thumb:

you guys are answering a question I have had for about a month now. good low volume detail is apparently a Bryston plus. Maybe I dont need 28's in the surround channels, just either a 4bsst or 14bsst.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with five 28BSSTs :D

However, if you have access to a 4BSST or a 14BSST (of a pair of 7BSSTs if you wanted to keep the monoblock theme going), I think you should give them a go. If you look at some of the reviews of the 14BSSt you will see that the general consensus is that its a great amp (a giant killer ). I will concede that the 28BSST is a notch above and a work of art, as James pointed out earlier. So much bass and voice info is in the front cahnnels that the 28BSSTs likely shine.

However, the rears in todays movies and music DVDs don't have the same demanding material. A 'lesser " BRYSTON would shine, IMHO. Five 28BSSTs would be 'World Class'. Three 28BSSts and a 14BSST would be .....'World Class'! Besides, even though you noted earlier that $16,000 of 28BSSTs compared favourably to $32,000 of Krell (another great company by reputation!), I'd be interested in your opinion of how $7,400 of 14BSST compared to even $32,000 of Krell or the 28BSSTs. I'm sure the 28BSSts are a notch above...but I'd bet the 14BSST would still put a smile on your face

Congrats on the 28BSSTs, by the way. In the world of high-end amps...I'm willing to bet they are somewhat of a coup :thumb:

I have 1 of the big Proceeds for now to run the surrounds. I'll let it set the bar against the 28's and see what happens. see what the power needs are then buy the approporiate Bryston to match the rest.
