Is it OK for the Ref9 V2 to get hot?
« on: 21 Apr 2008, 01:52 pm »
I have a pair of Ref 9 V2 amps driving the mains in my HT.  The speakers are running crossed over at 60Hz.  I watched a fairly long movie the other night (3 hours) and the amps were pretty hot afterward.  I was listening at moderate levels...certainly not ear-splitting.  Putting your hand on the case was pretty toasty!  Is this 1) OK? and 2) normal?

I forgot to mention...they're sitting in an open rack with about 3 inches of space above them and nothing around the front, back or sides;  the whole rack then resides in an equipment closet.

Not typical in my experience. Why not contact Tech support.

Some of the parts touch the top of the case in the V2 Reference and the case is used for heat dissipation. Mine get pretty warm, and they are in a glass case, and they run perfectly fine. Do they function correctly?

Don't expect the amp to just feel warm after a few hours of use. Assuming that you're consuming 30W of power, eventually it will heat up (the heatsink is touching the top cover for better heat dissipation). You would want the cover to heatup instead of the amp board.

The typical temperature on the top cover ranges from 45C to as high as 60C.

So about 110F to 160F.  That seems about right.  They get pretty warm but not so you can't touch them.  They do function just fine.  No worries I Guess!   :D
