Hi Dave, I've found the best results at setting 0 (zero on the scale) with my 440MLa on a 1210 using a Technics headshell. Wayner's the AT440MLa pimp around here, he may chime in too.

Distance Stylus to -----> top Cartrige .. pratically the height of the cartridge from the stylus point

17mm. (millimeters) -----> 0 position

18mm. ----> 1 position

19mm. ---> 2

20mm. ---> 3

21mm. ---> 4

I'm using an AT440MLa on my SL 1210, and I had to dial in by ear.

Being unfamiliar with the arm, and wanting to experiment with the on-the-fly VTA, this was the easiest method.

the 440MLa has lost a lot of the high freq issues (my issues) when mounted on the 1210 - its got balls now.

no clue where the marker is now, but the 'arm looks fairly perpendicular.

I don't know the AT440 but if you give me the cartridge height I 'll tell you where to work for the best VTA result
