HDMI and lip sync
« on: 10 Apr 2008, 07:45 pm »
Has anyone given up on HDMI due to lip sync problems? I just can't seem to get my DirecTV, PS3, Onkyo TX-SR805 and Panasonic plasma to jive together. I've made adjustments to the Onkyo but it's still off and annoying as hell!

It's not just with HDMI but with component video also with my DirecTv HR20-100. I have my A/V signals going to a Sunfire processor but I've tried direct connections to my Sony XBR TV and the problems the same there. This problem seems to be inherent with the receivers, DirecTv has admitted as much to those in the know at www.satelliteguys.us and future software downloads might hopefully correct it. I'm fortunate that I have video delay on my Sunfire so I do have some control over the problem but it's strictly a bandage solution at best. I'm open for any suggestions,,, other than complaining to D*.  :?

satfrat - we don't use onkyo receivers here at the a/v integrator i work at, but i do know the current denon ci (custom installer) line has a really, really great lip synching feature that fixes problems with our time warner cable down here.

the other recommendation i have, and this is with varying success between various receiver manufacturers, is to adjust the 'distance from seating' measurement on your speaker calibrations.  some receivers, if you say you're sitting really far away, will slightly delay the video circuit to match the delivery of audio and video at the same time to listener.  however, this will delay the video/audio for all sources, so if one source is problematic...well it may have to be the only one you use.

regarding installations with directv, sometimes we go with component video and digital or analog audio to match up the synching as best as possible.  it's not ideal, but it works beautifully.

hope this helps,

Doesn't really help much but thanks anyways for your thoughts. With my Sunfire, I'm finding a delay of 7-8ms on my HR20 receiver. Personally i would never consider analog audio hookup as it's too much of a step back in audio quality for me. I also wouldn't exagerate the distances either cuz I listen to my music in Dolby Pro Logic 2x as much as I watch TV and misaligned distances would ruin the sound stage. I can get the sound fairly close with my Sunfire, that's my fix til DirecTv comes up with their own.

Oh yeah, another point that needs to be made is this delay varies with the channels that are affected,,, there are some channels that don't have this problem. There is no constant delay setting that can be made. Another bug that I have with the HR20-100 is the RF remote won't work unless you're within 2 "line of sight" feet of the rear antenna. I've never seen such a useless RF remote and I can't imagine how anyone with a TV in the bedroom could possibly use this 2 tuner receiver. Fortunately I don't believe in more than 1 TV in a home and the IR remote is a strong one. But the sat forum is peppered with this complaint.

As a tweek, I will be placing an Audio Magic Pulse Gen ZX in my HD DVR receiver this weekend. I popped the case open today and found the perfect(and only) opening for this unit up front and next to the USB port on the left hand side. If it has the same effect as it did in my HTPC, then I'll have reason to be excited. But I doubt it'll have any effect on the lip sync problem. Here's a writeup on this tweek: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=44482.msg475621#msg475621

The delay settings on the Onkyo are in 5ms increments. I can get it close in the 5-10ms range but not perfect. It seems to be better on some days then others, or maybe it's the different programs that I am watching.

5ms?? Man, I feel your pain. No wonder you're so unhappy. Even at 1ms, I can't get it perfect. Hopefully DirecTv has the capability to upgrade their software but their past track record hasn't been very good I'm afraid. Then there's this last satellite D11 that has their attention also. More HD content = more lip sync potential. Guess all we can do is complain and those forums are always a good place to start, direct calls are another as are direct emails. BUT if my some dumb chance this Pulse Gen ZX has a positive effect on lip sync, all tho I can't imagine how, I will be letting you know about it!  :D
