Power for 5 channels ( Home Theater )
« on: 11 Oct 2003, 12:21 pm »
Hi

I was thinking about 2 options :
- 3 x Mono Extremes ( main left & right + center ) + 1 x Stratos Stereo Extreme ( rear left & right )
-  1 Stratos Stereo Extreme  ( main left & right ) + 1 x Mono Extremes (  center ) +  1 x Stratos Stereo ( rear left & right )

If my calculations are correct, the first option will cost around 5.5 K and the second about 4 K. Do you think it worth the difference ?

Regards

I do not think you need mono or extreme mono for rear.  My setup is Dual mono (L & R) + Mono (Center) + 2 x Stratos (rear and center rear).  I feel I am in heaven.

I suggest to you is: 3 x  mono extreme (LCR) + Stratos.  You need put the best amps for L and R.

Hi James

That was my thought too. And I have a good one ( or I think : a Sony "SACD" TA-N1 http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/612-sony-ta-n1-super-amplifier.html ).
I have to decide if I'm going to keep it and find somethink to match for center & rears. Or sell it and buy amplifier(s) for the all 5 channels.

Hi Guys,

Well,  I have to agree with James as well.  Of course,  first and foremost the synergy between the amps and the speakers are the most important issue,  and we obviously have to see if your speakers work well with any of the Stratii ??? Stratoi ??.

Having said that,  we then have to look as to what's the best bang for the buck in your system and your requirements (music vs. HT).

Generally, though,  I have to agree with James here as well.  3 Extremes for the front to make the center channel  as coherent as possible is indeed the sonically best approach,  if it fits your budget, which has to be the overriding aspect in any decision anyway.  However,  if your system is mostly geared for 2 channel music,  I'd even go with a regular mono for the center, or indeed with an HT 3 for center - rears.

Lastly,  don't get me wrong,  I'd be very happy to sell you more amps,  but really,  if you're mostly into 2 channel,  absolutely keep the Sony for the rears.

As always,  please call me so that we can discuss everything in great detail.

Thanks,

Klaus
