I'm a big fan and am looking for other similar down-tempo electronica, but not of the dub genre. What I specifically like about Sigur Ros is the slow rise to an almost crescendo-like finale. A little more involving than just background music. Any suggestions?

Off the top of my head I'd say check out Halou, Múm, and Amon Tobin. Worm Is Green (also from Iceland) is more indie rock but has that sort of mood of Sigur Ros.

Sigur Ros is really unique with their invented language (ala cocteau twins) so it's hard to say anyone is similar.

I might also put Arcade Fire - Neon Bible on that list.  Not quite the same, but its a downtempo mood music that is still catchy.

I'm a fan of Sigur Ros although I can find the invented 'hopelandish' language a bit repetitive at times, I prefer it when jonsi sings in Icelandic, despite this small criticism I do like their music a lot.

One of the earliest people I know of to sing in a made up language and still the best at it IMO is Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance fame, she sings almost exclusively in a made up language that is rich and varied.

Lisa's last album The Silver Tree might be worth a look the music doesn't quite build up to huge crescendos but it is still interesting in a different way, it’s slow like Sigur Ros but darker and with a far sparser production.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I'll look into them. Although a made up language is unique, it's not necessarily a requirement.

I have a few of her albums but not the one you mention. Yes, she's quite good.

In addition to everyone else's excellent suggestions, Mogwai and Tortoise are two seminal acts in the "post-rock" genre of epic instrumental rock. 

I also really like Broken Social Scene, especially the Feel Good Lost album that takes the post-rock aesthetic and fuses it to more of a pop format.

I'm going to have to 2nd the Mum suggestion, specifically their 2002 release Finally We Are No One...That's a pretty epic album, and definitly has some slower, moodier ambient parts. Plus the Brekken sisters have very soft, floaty voices. Beautiful stuff right there.

You might want to dig into a shoegaze artist or too if your into that type of sound. Bedhead and Slowdive come to mind right away.

Mmmm, there's a Japanese pop artist named Piana who makes really nice ambient drum stuff...

Wow, a post-rock-ish thread on AC, woohoo!  All of the prior suggestions are good in their own ways. As far as similarity to Sigur Ros, I would say a lot of Godspeed You Black Emperor is the closest, in my opinion. Buildup; quieter parts and crashing crescendos, lots of ethereal sounds at times.

Godspeed is one of those bands that you hear nothing but good things about, so naturally you would be inclined to listen to them, but I am sad to say I just do not. I don't know why that happens with certain artists with me. Like I just KNOW I SHUOLD own a few albums and don't...strange.

Maybe there's just too much good music out there to be consumed.

I was listening to an album the other day that I thought would be perfect for this thread. It's a group called Pluramon and the album is called Top Dreams Rock. It's simply amazing...Very heavy, ambient, "shoegazy" type of stuff. The vocalist in the group is Julle Cruise, best known for her work in Twin Peaks as well as lots of music with Angelo Badalamenti. If you like Sigur Ros, this should be right up your alley...
