Can I get 24/96 output from Tiger OS 10.4? Help...
« on: 25 Mar 2008, 02:11 am »
OK, I'm new at the server thing so bear with me please. I found the MIDI audio window but the only output available is 44/16. Can I get there from Tiger 10.4.11? My old G$ can't tak an upgrade to leopard...

Do I need a newer iTune version. I want to audition an EA Offramp Turbo usb DAC and that is the sugggested input...

Any direction would be appreciated.   Also comments on Emperical Audio's Offramp Turbo.

Thanks

Crimson

Hi,

As a matter of course, you have to plug the device into the machine before you can select bit and sample rates. The computer then communicates with the attached device, after which supported bit and sample rates are shown in AudioMidi. As an example, my current USB dac only supports 16/44.1 so that's the only option available to me. Prior to this, I had a 24/96 USB dac so bit and sample rates through 24/96 were available. Tiger does support 24/96. Run Software Update to see if any newer versions of iTunes are available to you.

I've heard nothing but good things about Empirical's product line, so I don't think you can go wrong there.

Hi Crimson,

That explains it!

One other question, I invested $200 to add ram and update the OS in my old G4. Should I stop there and go for a Mac laptop that can run battery power? Not sure if the battery power makes a real improvement sonic... Any opinion?

Thanks,
Will

Will,

If all you'll use it for is music, I think you should be good with your current machine. As far as a laptop is concerned, it's always nice to get off the power grid with nice battery powered components. OTOH, depending on how you connect your machine to your system (electrical isolation) and whether your system will realize any sonic benefits from a laptop is something only you can really answer.

Hope this helps.
