Signature 30/30.2 question
« on: 21 Mar 2008, 01:20 am »
I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a used signature 30/30.2 amp to try with my new Omega MaxHemp speakers. Source is a fully Bolder modded SB3 with all the trimmings. There are a couple different setup options available that I would like to get some opinions on.

Look for an amp with volume control and use it to control the volume. Set the volume on the SB3 to full essentially bypassing it.

Look for an amp w/o volume control and keep using the SB3 digital volume control.

Look for an amp w/o volume control and then find a tube preamp to control volume.

I would rather not have to add another component to the mix. I am using an RM200 tube amp now and wonder if I will miss tubes somewhere in the system when it is out. Seems like most people using a sig amp are running a tube preamp.

The volume control on the 30/30.2 can be considered a "gain matcher" which will allow your preamp to run in its happy place, no matter what speakers you're using.  It's a very high end attenuator that won't ruin transparency.  I'd go with the attenuator.

Thanks Mike. I'm hoping to not have to use a preamp at all, but what you said makes sense.

Anyone else?
