Jim, did you state a Castinet could be reconfigured as a line stage preamp?

If I stuff the board into a larger box as i did my Clarinet and Cornet2 projects, I could easily run a three or four position input switch.

What would I need to do to boost the gain enough to accomplish line stage voltages?

Is this a feasible project?

Actually, it makes a fine linestage as-is.  No way to boost gain, though.  Unless you can find a different output tranny.  I've been using mine for the PA-10 power amp testing as a linestage.  You just use the "HI" output as line level.  The nice thing is that the output impedance is under 20 ohms!  It can drive anything.  And you still have the "LO" for driving headphones.

If you want more inputs, well, that's just a matter of wiring in a bunch of RCAs to a select switch.  Then feed that to the board.

You probably don't need more than the 3dB or so gain it provides.  A CD player will typically have 2Vrms output.  Most power amps reach clipping at 1Vrms.  In reality, the linestage provides -6dB.  If you have an SS amplifier, the 1/2 percent 2nd order distortion of the CASTANET might just sweeten it up nicely.

I have been running it this way almost since I completed the Castanet. I found a phone plug to rca converter; plugged it into the high out and just enjoyed the music. I keep my Grados in the Lo output. 3dB is all I need. This is is a tremendous bargain.
Enjoy

What power amp and speakers are you using for this setup?  What is the sensitivity of your speakers?

I use AKSA 55W amps for my mids (2 PHL 1230s) and highs (Raven 2) and Muse 150s to drive my SEAS 10: woofers.
The mid/high combo is 96dB while the woofer is 89dB.

Hope that helps.
