Question on Bryston power cords
« on: 25 May 2008, 02:50 am »
I was wondering if there was any info available on Bryston power cords?
What is the construction of Bryston cords, solid wire or stranded (if so, how many strands per lead)?
Are conductors twisted in some unusual geometry?
What is insulation used, pvc, polyethylene, something else?
Are Bryston cords shielded, and if so, how (how many meshed wire or whatever layers)?
Would there be any reason not to use power cord on BCD-1 with conductors of lower gage from the one in the cord that comes with BCD-1?
What is the lowest gage of power cables that Bryston makes with standard connectors that power cords for BCD-1 and 7B SST are terminated with?
These may sound strange questions, but I have been listening to BCD-1 today in my system and again I find that Bryston power cords work better with BCD-1 as well as amps and other gear from other manufacturers than whatever power cords I have tried.
And it seems to me the less shield the better.
So I am wondering what Bryston does with power cords, if it is not trade secret, and if it would make sense that I build some unshielded low gage power cords?

Hi Sasha
Do you really think that the supplied power cords make a difference?. Im using power cords that come with panasonic plasma tv's, their shielded with foil and have ferrite thingy-me-bobs on each end. Im not sure though what amp cable they are. Do you think i will notice a difference in sound qulity if I dig out the supplied cords of the brystons compared to those?

Bassmann,

Power cables do make an audible difference, I would not be asking this question if I did not hear it.
But the change they introduce is not necessarily an improvement, and it is not always true that more $ brings better performance.
I did not play a lot with power cords, a few that I have gave different results with different equipment.
In case of Bryston gear (applicable to 7B SST I own and BCD-1 I have auditioned), I found that prefer cords that come with Bryston, however strange it may sound to someone.
I was wondering if this may be attributed to the fact they are not heavily shielded, resulting in lower inductance and resistance, thus providing more peak power on demand (I am doing a wild guessing here)?
I cannot say what would be the result in your case, best thing is to try and judge it by yourself.
