I've been seeing ads and discussion regarding "high def speakers" recently and for the life of me can't figure out what the definition of a high def speaker is.
I understand high def in regard to video, and understand high def in regard to radio stations but what makes a speaker, or driver, "high def"? Is it some kind of standard, or benchmark, that a speaker must reach to be considered high def, Kind of like a THX standard? Or is it a bunch of marketing crap?

You answered your own question.  It's a bunch of marketing crap.  For that matter so it HD radio.  HD in radio doesn't stand for High Definition, it stands for Hybrid Digital - but they use HD 'cause that's the big buzz word right now.

  I've not looked into "HD"radio, as I don't care much about improving the quality of FM audio in my 'ride' or my home. But I'm not suprised that the term HD is being thrown around like it is.

This reminds me of the early days of digital when speakers, amplifiers and headphones were touted breathlessly, as "Digital Ready" (caps theirs).

High definition could mean something in speakers, I think. I imagine it would have to do with the impulse response, and how clean it is. Fast rise and settling times contribute to a good result.

I hate the word "Xtreme"....
I won't buy a product that uses the letter 'x' to start the word extreme. That's stupid and gimmicky.
