EnABL coating now part of our Apex III
« on: 20 Dec 2007, 05:15 am »
After we had a chance to listen to the FR125S driver with and without the driver treatment EnABL process. We have made the choice to have this process added to the midrange drivers in the Apex III plus the new Apex C and the new HT3 (Jan 1,08)as well.
With the process on the driver the driver has more dynamic change to the sound is the best way to say the change.
Some people have said the change when we compaired the FR125S driver with and with out the treatment, was like the singer changed from a cheap mic to a higher quality mic on the recording.

I will post a few pictures of the new modified drivers later for those to look at.
A few pictures with and without the flash

Are you actually doing this EnABL treatment yourself?

No we are having Dave Dlugos do it for us as he has been doing it to a lot of drivers.

Hi Al,
Glad to see  you can not resist improving your products.
Where can learn  about EnABLE.       What does it do that creates the improvement in sound quality?
Is it a liquid that penetrates the woffer material? Is there a curing process like the Enmeister C22 laquer?

Anything wrong with using this coating technique on other drivers like the M130, M130X, etc...

Best,
Anand.

Thanks Denny  :thumb:
I am working on complete documentation of the Enabl process but really this is something you just have to listen to to understand.

Yes it can be applied to the M series divers

The pattern required is generic. The only thing needed is to scale it appropriately and to put the rings in the right place. If you step over to the big EnABL thread on diyAudio you will find that you will get lots of help if you want to venture into exploring EnABL.

Hey Al, been awhile ... hope you're doing well!

I'm very intrigued by the fact that you're using EnABL now.  I've been curious about trying it myself on a few drivers, but please share with us how your decision to use it came to be.  How much testing did you do, and on what sort of drivers?  Have you tried it on dome tweeters?  And now that you're using it, are you totally convinced that it's something anyone could benefit from?

With a lot of testing, the thing I did not like out of the process was the lack of being able to produce a look that was even from one driver to the next.Out of a few cases I had done. The look of them was not something I would like to see in finished products.

I like the over all changes that are present with the drivers with the modifications but getting the drivers to have a consistant look can be a issue.

Now the treatment on the cone is something else.

Does the cone treatment have a similar effect?

The cone treatment we are doing has different sound characteristics.

With the EnABL And many drivers I have measured.A few cases of 4.5" drivers plus some of the SDX7 woofers all before modifications all drivers were broken in for 24hrs then measured free air plus in a box.Nearfield and  also 19" on axis.

With all the mods the frequency response changed with the treatment but not really with Enabl. There was a change but not enough to say.SEE there is a large difference. That is what people are hearing. This is good because people swear up and down the frequency response has to have a great change to be audioable.Wrong!

The over layered plot of the same drivers before and after treatment show only 1db change on a few location's of the frequency response of the drivers. But the treatment changed the driver greatly. The one driver sampled for treatment was the SDX7 done by a third party not myself.
This driver had a major response change on the SDX7 woofer with the treatment only.So much so it is another driver, both in frequency response plus sound quality.

So with this I set out to do my own modifications to the SDX7 which I now do in personally. With this I control ever step of the process plus measure before and after modifications to the drivers.
