Pace Car or Bolder Mods for a Squeezebox
« on: 2 Feb 2008, 06:13 pm »
After debating between an olive an SB im leaning towards the SB.  So if one goes with a SB can anyone provide any opinions of the relative merits of either of these configurations

1) SB with Bolder digital mods and basic PS upgrade into meitner bitstream dac
2) SB with full analog mods and basic PS ugrade to pre amp (no dac)
3) SB with Empirical Pace car into meitner bitstream dac

Thanks all, my preferernce would be the new SB duet, but i dont think wayne has announce any bolder mods yet.

I have all three but my DAC is Northstar 192.  Once I get my loaned out Bolder SB2 back and Pace-Car SB3 is fully burned in (a week or so more), I plan to do a careful comparison with cost analysis.  I will even compare all three to my analog set up (Koetsu Rosewood Sig/SME IV/Oracle Delphi V/Art Audio Vinyl One).  It will be fun.

Man..you are a fortunate person..
I am eagerly looking forward to hear the differences between #1 and #3.
In my books, #3 (w/ I2s) should be in the same  ball park as top notch transports (like EMM, DCS, Northstar etc).

Woodsyi,
you always seem to be the man comparing the stuff that people really wanna know!
all I can say is..
thank you! bring it on.
actually i think  people around here have a lot of  respect for both designers and I think your  reviews are  both tactful and  respectful.   :thumb:

I eagerly await your findings. I respect both designers. I have not heard an empircal product but Steve's post have always been accurate and he has stayed consistent in what ive read....

I have good relations with both Wayne and Steve.  I respect works from both of these guys who are also very good people.  It may seem like I am pitting the two against each other but I am not trying to do that at all.  I think they are catering to different markets.  I have a mandate from my wife that she be able to come down, put a CD in and play the setup without me.  So, an actual CD transport is a must for me to have in the system.  I have kept up with Wayne's work on SB on both digital and analog fronts.  I have always preferred digital out to analog out until the last update (prior to RMAF and collaboration with Hugh) when analog got even with the digital out.

At the same time, I was also using I2S Off Ramp from Steve for direct interface with PC but I figured out that sound was very dependent upon DSP.  As I fiddled around I really liked some tracks but I also found a few that were over-saturated with processing.  I am sure it will get better with software improvement.  I really didn't want to give up on Off Ramp because 24/96 music really jumps out at you with overall clarity and depth compared to 16/44 but I decided to go with Pace Car for my digital out.  Implementation of Pace Car was not feasible for a bulky PC and I am leery about eventual obsoletion of any PCs in a few years.  I have kept my eyes on Pace car ever since Steve modded my DAC but could not update the clock due to none being available at the right frequency.  When Pace-car became available, I decided to give up on the Off ramp and the 24/96 capability and go with a Pace-car to slave a (44.1k only) SB3 and my 24/192 transport.  I have been intrigued by the Lessloss DAC and its master/slave solution and this does the same thing.  I get the best clock(s) for both of my transports and I don't have to deal with the vagaries of PS related distortion coming out the Squeeze Box.

From my perspective, I see both trying to get the best sound out of SB's.  Steve is working with an external solution with digital out only and Wayne more or less is working internally (counting the external PS as intrinsic part of SB) to get the best signal out.  Both have pros and cons as is the case in all things audio (and everything else if you get right down to it). It will be very interesting to compare what each does at what price point.  I hope the findings will be informative for the readers and beneficial to both companies.  BTW, I respect both gentlemen and I think they do great work but I have no hidden ties with either except being a satisfied repeat customer.
