Ipod Preamp?
« on: 4 Feb 2008, 06:28 pm »
Anyone heard of or seen a preamp that has an iPod dock station built in?

I'd like to find a decent one that can handle 2 or 3 other sources.

iPod docks are inexpensive and many varieties are available.
You are better off getting the Pre-amp you like and then connecting the line out from the iPod dock to the pre-amp like CD player etc.

Another (better) option would be for you to get a modified iPod (iMod) from Red Wine audio or ALOaudio.
Wadia is coming up a device that will extract the Digital copy out of your iPod - that will require an external dac to connect to your pre-amp.

Good Luck

Cheers
Sunil.

The type of compression you use, IMHO, is going to make a bigger difference in what you hear...ideally, if I had an Ipod I'd run Rockbox on it to take advantage of lossless compression :)

But V0 would work in a pinch, I guess...

You can also stick with the Apple Firmware / iTunes and use Apple Lossless, which is also lossless.... or go with WAV or AIFF (both are uncompressed formats).

I got an 'obsolete' Toshiba Gigabeat and plan to use RockBox on it. I will run it into a USB DAC. I did see the announcment of the Wadia unit and I imagine there will be more of it's type coming.
