AVP-17 - cutting off the initial part of songs?
« on: 30 Apr 2008, 09:02 pm »
Using a CD player, the Sony 595, it seems to drop the link between songs and it takes a second to reacquire it. This causes the first few seconds to  be cut off from some tracks that have a long pause between tracks.

 What to do?

This has happened on Aux1 and the DVD input. The Sony SCD-595 doesn't have a coaxial so I haven't tried the coaxial input. Any ideas?

I just tried coaxial with a different player than I usually use. There is no way around this that I can see. This is crazy. The unit sounds great but this makes it a boat anchor.

Many people use AVP-17 (including myself) and have no such problem so this is not a general product issue. You should take it up with Nuforce support.

AVP17 has to detect many data formats, and whenever there is a long digital signal lapse, it will re-detect the the incoming signal.  Newer CD players and DVD players usually will not send out such digital nulls between tracks to prevent the downstream equipment from re-detecting (or re-syncing).

During the re-detection, the AVP17 scrolls and shows the detected signal format, eg, 'PCM 44.1kHz'.  If the display scrolls this message on every track, it's doing the re-detection.  Otherwise, after the message 'PCM 44.1kHz' first scrolled up, the display just maintains a static display of (eg) 'DVD Coaxial' on subsequent tracks.

Simple Solution might be to use the analog outputs.  For SACD you need to anyhow.

Next best thing might be to sell the Sony and get the OPPO.

Epinions shows that the unit is prone to "drop outs"

Thanks for the replies. Interestingly, both players that I tried with CD so far --the Sony SACD 5 disc changer and A Sony DVD player NS-601HP had this problem. I don't think it is a defective player like the one other person described on epinions though. It is pretty much as Casey described above - the AVP drops the stream and needs to reacquire it if the CD has a long pause between songs. You can se this when I feed the AVP Dolby Digital from my cable box and commercials may or may not be in the correct format and the player drops it and then has to restablish which digital rate it is using.

I didn't have this problem on my previous receiver, but then again, it was a Sony receiver too.

Do we know for certain that the oppo doesn't inject this "digital silence" specifically or just that it works?

Early Oppo (don't remember which model) player had the dropping out issue and were corrected with firmware upgrades.  Therefore, we believe it's specific, not coincidence.

Happens on my new Oppo 983 universal player too.
