I read the book as a wee lad (six years old or so), mostly because I liked the cover (hey, I was bookworm from the start). Took me a while to finish it, and it went almost entirely over my head ("mommy, what does 'genitals' mean?"), but I've read it several times since and it remains one of my favorites of all-time, nostalgia be damned. The sequels never really hit me, alas. They keep talking about making a movie but I don't know if it could work.
Beyond that? The 2nd hand on the statue of great '80s (heck, great EVER) sci-fi is "Neuromancer" by William Gibson. Great author by the way. Put that one of your list.
