Online Music Locker?
« on: 18 Jan 2008, 04:44 pm »
In reading the material about the new Slimdevices remote I saw something about these online music lockers: http://mp3tunes.com/. Has anyone used this service before? It sounds pretty nice with free unlimited storage (sort of) or $40 per year for an upgraded service. Seems like if it works well then this eliminates the need for an NAS with a Squeezebox. If anyone has any experience with this, I would like to hear about it as it seems to have great potential. . .if it works. . .

Never heard of it before but it looks like a cool idea.

I decided to try it out. It is a very cool idea, but implementation is lacking. Here are the main problems:

1. Upload time. I was just uploading the MP3 version of my music which is something like 13 MB. It said it was going to take 3-4 days. If I uploaded my FLAC version I'm sure it would have taken over a month of tying up my computer.

2. No shuffle option. I was thinking it would be ok for just listening to compressed music as background music but I like shuffle capability for that. I couldn't find it if it was there.

3. Breakups. Due to network traffic I guess I got the "rebuffering" message on almost every song. This was playing compressed MP3's. Again FLAC wouldn't have worked at all I'm guessing.

So my conclusion is that if you want to have your MP3's available to listen to from any computer you might be at then the service is pretty cool. For using with a Squeezebox, it is only slightly workable and certainly won't replace a home server. Hopefully they beef it up so that it could be.
