Golden Tube SE40 Hot Rod -SOLD!
« on: 24 Dec 2007, 08:23 pm »
:drums: :thumb:  SOLD! :thumb:  :guitar:I am the original owner of this amp. I bought it in '96 and have not had any reliability issues with it what so ever. I hope I'm not making a mistake by selling my beloved version 3 SE40, but I must sell it to raise funds for a new amp that caught my ear.

Modifications to this amp include:

•.33/600 Auricaps
•.1/630 Platnum Sonicaps
• 3.9 Mundorf Silver/Oil caps
•ED Panasonics for the power supply
•Dale Vishay S102 biasing resistors
•PRP metal film cathode resistors
•Diode bridges have been changed to faster diodes
•All wiring has been re-routed
•The signal wires were replaced with 5N's silver in Teflon
•Multi-turn bias pots
•Isoclean fuse
•WBT Nextgens
•Cardas Patented Silver Binding Posts.
•All ferrous screws have been replaced with stainless and/or brass
•All questionable resistors, diodes and the power switch have been replaced.
•All modifications were performed by APL Hi-Fi or Sonic Craft. I chose what I considered to be the best of both approaches... the results have been fantastic!

•Virgin peek and beryllium copper dampers with Super Sonic pads from Herbies
•Nickle dampers with Super Sonic pads (not seen in pic) for all the output tubes
• I have many different 6SN7 types to choose from
•The winged "C" Svetlana 6L6GC's (as seen)
•A fresh sextet of TungSol reissued KT66's... all tube sets have been platnium matched.

This sale will include:

•The amp
•3 face plates (I have the original gold aircraft aluminum face plate, a blood wood face plate plus the beautiful    cocobolo piece shown above)
•3 sets of driver tubes (your choice)
•2 sets output tubes plus the original 5881's
•All the dampers
•All the modifications seen (well over $1000 worth of mods alone)
•All the original packaging
•Biasing harness
•Manual
•Original sales brochures
•Original receipt

This amp has excellent bass response, sweet mid-range and a soft-natural high end, with a huge, deep sound stage (up and down as well as side to side) and hauntingly good imaging.

I'm more than happy to answer any questions or to provide more pix as needed.

$1200 O.B.O.! Shipping included with-in the C.U.S.:o

I'm willing to sell the amp at a better price without all the extra tubes if that is of interest to anyone.

Btw the 6SN7's I have are mostly VT231's from Sylvania, RCA and Raytheon, plus Sylania 6SN7GT's, TungSol 6SN7GTB's, Sylvania chrome domes, Kenrad 6SN7GT, etc.

Also: price has been lowered to $1200 for the whole bag!

It just occurred to me that I also have this mirror-finish blood wood face plate (pix do NOT do it justice) that I made for this amp and never installed. I'll include it in the sale as well.  :o

Scott,  If I had the money I'd take it.  With upgraded caps and other parts, these are great amps.  I had a stock one for a few months and loved it -- until it's owner wanted it back :D.

Good luck with the sale.

I hope somebody buys this from Scott sooner or later. Scott is a great fella here in AC and a gifted craftsman when it comes to industrial wood design. I for one have a few solid state amps I would like to have decorated by him, but just haven't had time to do all the measurements, etc...I'm gonna first start with my gainclone and then go from there (see my moniker on left). That mirror finished bloodwood would be sublime.

This tube amp is a  smokin deal if I've ever seen one...

Well, I decided to put the new KT66's in this weekend. They biased up perfectly and they make this amp sound so good! If it doesn't sell, I think I'll be okay with keeping it. I'll just have to make more Thingamaknobs to pay for the new piece. I'm not sure why there's not more interest... this amp sounds better than most I've heard in the sub $15,000 range.

That sure is a nice looking amp! This may be a dumb question but is it 40 wpc?

Scott,

Good decision!  When properly upgraded with components that actually meet or exceed spec, these are killer amps.

Have you tried any of the new breed of current production Tung-Sol 6SN7s?  If you do, *I'd be interested to hear your impressions.

Hey John,

Yes it is 40 watts per channel or 80 watts if bridged with another. I've driven many different speakers with this amp that it performed amazingly well with, like the Dynaudio 1.3MkII's and the Totem Hawks which I'm sure you know, like some power. I've never felt the need for more.

Hey Jim,

Indeed, the TungSol re-issued KT66's are even better than I'd expected. I've collected many different 6SN7's over the years with this amp, but I haven't tried the re-issued TS 6SN7GT's. I do have a set of the original TS 6SN7GTB's that are actually very nice sounding and somewhat linear. My personal favorite has always been the early Sylvania 6SN7GT's or VT231's... circa '52 being the stand-out IMHO.
