tube options for SAS 10A
« on: 14 Jan 2008, 11:57 pm »
Hi All:

My system currently does double duty for 2 channel and TV/HT.  My current setup consists of a SB3 with Boulder digital mods into a Zhalou 2.0 DAC going to an Odyssey Tempest w/HT Bypass going to a Khartago amp going to my Odyssey Nightengales ( I use a Manrantz SR-7200 for HT processing).  I have been contemplating for some time about moving to a tubed pre.

I recently bought a SAS 10A preamp and had Steve Sammett from SAS Audio install an HT Bypass in it (BTW, Steve will now have the HT Bypass Option as an option on his new 7A pre).  I have had the 10A in my system for about one week and all I can say is WOW!!  I know, I know... it doesn't have a remote and it has a volume knob for left/right channels.  However, what it has done for my audio listening pleasure has been significant.  Plus, my fat behind needs some slimming down anyway...

I would appreciate those that are tube savvy(especially 10A owners) to help me in buying some other tubes for the 10A(not that the stock tubes are bad - JJ E88CC's).  I own a pair of Holland Amperex 6DJ8/ECC88 Bugle Boys but was looking for other options.  Are Tesla E88CC's a good buy?  I plan on listening with the stock tubes for a while to get a good idea of their sound and then tube roll a little.

thanks in advance,

rklein

The 10A is great and voiced fine with the JJ's.  Sure, play with the tubes (did you try your Amperex yet?), but the MOST improvement will be had by getting proper mods for your Zhaolu, such as the Oritek Mod, which is a GREAT sounding unit..
