Maestro XL amp LED question
« on: 22 Feb 2008, 09:38 pm »
Just got my XL amp and I am confused about the LEDs.

There are two of them on the amp labeled Standby and Protect.

The manual says when Standby=Blue the amp is in Run mode. When Standby=Unlighted and Protect=Yellow the amp is in Standby mode.

The manual then goes on to say when the Power-on/Fault Indicator LED is Green it indicates normal operation and that a Red LED indicates a fault condition. There no LED labeled as such and I'm guessing the Power-on/Fault Indicator LED is the same as the Protect LED. I am also guessing that in Run mode that Standby=Blue AND Protect=Green.

The reason I am trying to understand this is because of the following: On powering up my amp I get Standby=Unlighted and Protect=Red. Pushing the Run/Standby switch: Standby=Blue and Protect=Green. Engaging the Switch again creates Standby=Unlighted and Protect=Red.

The manual says to check for a short circuit situation if the amp powers up with a Red LED. I triple checked everything which is one interconnect and a pair of speaker cables and found no problems. The Red LED also comes up with no interconnects or speaker cable connected to the amp.

Can anyone explain what is going on? Does the Yellow LED actually exist?

Strange, the manual is just flat out wrong and no one ever said anything until now . . . . Murphy must be laughing. :duh:

This is how it should and WILL read:

Run / Standby Indicator LED: When the BLUE LED on the front panel in ON, it indicates the amp is in Run mode. When the BLUE LED is OFF and the Protect LED is RED, it indicates the amp is in Standby (Mute) mode.

"Power-on / Fault Indicator LED: When the unit is in Run mode, (normal operation) the GREEN LED indicates normal operation. When the unit is in Run mode, and the GREEN LED turns RED it indicates that an over-temperature or fault condition exits. In the event of a RED LED during normal operation, simply switch the amp to Standby for a few minutes. Once the amp has cooled off, it should be ready to resume normal operation."

BTW: I've yet to see one of these overheat and go RED in any normal conditions. We've managed to do it with abusive sine wave testing, but that's about it.

Maybe some of those comments in passing about how "real men don't read/need manuals" is somewhat true. They just "dig in!"
