New speaker bug
« on: 15 Jan 2008, 01:05 am »
Coming into the new year, I have the bug to try out a new set of speakers. I do have a pair of Al's excellent HT8 speakers that I will not be selling, I just want to try out something a little different. My room is 14' x 18' deep with the speakers setup on the short wall. Current equipment includes fully Bolder modded SB3 and a Music Reference RM200 tube amp.

A couple of speakers that I am interested in are:

Emerald Physics CS2
Eminent Technology LFT8
Omega Max Hemp

Each speaker poses a possible problem though. The CS2 would need an additional amplifier to power the bass section. I do have a Behringer EP2500 that I use to power a sub, but it may be too much power and the fan is on the loud side. The LFT8 has a very low sensitivity (83db) and the RM200 may not be able to power it adequately. I fear the Max Hemp may be better suited to a smaller SET type amp.

Given my room size and current equipment, does anyone have a suggestion on what speaker might best suite me?

Mike....

You'd have no problem with the Omega Max Hemp and the Music Reference RM200 tube amp. The Omega's can handle power ....and they sound good with a few watts or a lot of watts. Ever own a single driver speaker ?

That's an extremely diverse and worthy short list of speakers, mca!

The Eminent Technology LFT-8 is probably about as inefficient as the CS2 is efficient.
An earlier ET owned by a friend - maybe the LFT4 - was about the least efficient speaker I have ever witnessed, swallowing up the output from a 150 W class A amp and producing shockingly little acoustic output to show for it.

maybe you should go for the TRW-17 sub by Eminent Technologies:
http://www.eminent-tech.com/main.html

I scanned the review by Peter Moncrieff (under "Latest News" on the TRW-17 page) - twelve pages of intense exploration into the value of sub-20Hz response. Really made me want to hear what he was talking about

I especially liked his description of the comparison between otherwise top-rated subs - flat to 16 Hz and the TRW-17 when playing the apparently well recorded cannons in Master and Commander. This was on page 152, near the top (ten pages in).
I know if I had 25 large to throw away, I would be calling Bruce Thigpen of ET!

I thought my sub was bad-ass, but that thing is crazy!
