3 B SST Thermal shutdown
« on: 29 Jan 2008, 02:58 am »
I have a 3b sst as part of a four way active crossovered system.  The  3b runs a JBL compression driver.  The amp is six months old and has never been a problem and always runs cool.  Lately when I first turn it on one of the channels (either right or left) within two to four minutes goes into thermal shutdown and the side of the amp is very hot.  After I shut it down for 30 minutes and turn it back on everything is fine.  Any suggestion or does it have to get serviced?

I had a similar problem with two of the three channels on my 6B SST. I keep my amplifiers permanently powered so this problem occurred only on rare occasions where I was compelled to completely switch off the unit and then on again. The remedial measure of powering down and then on again only proved to be a minor inconvenience that I chose to live with until two of the fuses -on the channels in question- inexplicably burnt out when switched back on from idle. This was after over two years of use. Attempts to replace the fuses didn't help. I had the unit sent over to the Bryston facility where their team provided me with unparalleled support to have the situation remedied and just a week or so ago, the unit was returned and hooked up. It works to perfection. I'm sure though that there might be someway of having it fixed rather than returning the unit to the facility, which I must confess I didn't bother checking out.

Best,

DF

Hi DF,

Disconnect the inputs and speaker outputs from the amp and see if it still gets hot and shuts down. If it does it may need a 'bias adjustment'.  If it doesn't hook up the speakers and see what happens then hook up the inputs and see if things change.
