NuForce 9.02 - Best Set Up Practices
« on: 4 Jun 2008, 10:25 am »
A pair of these will be arriving today.  I've owned class A/B amps exclusively, and I'm looking forward to checking these out.

What best practices for getting the most out of these amps have forum members contributed?  I've read a number of posts already, and there seems to be a wide degree of opinions on power cords, interconnects, line conditioners, etc.  So, let's keep this simple.  What are the best recommendations for:

- Set up and isolation, it this critical?  Do the amps benefit from, say, Vibrapods or other isolation tweaks?
- Improved power cords?  The manufacturer suggests that a cord with a choke is ideal.
- Placement - are there any issues placing the amps near other gear - CD players, Tuners, etc.?
- Other suggestions you've gained from experience?

Thanks!

good power conditioning, and power cords really enhance the performance.

Hello,

I also found that isolation footers important especially for the nuforce.  This unit is highly detailed and very prone to edginess if set on hard spikes, cone-ball-cone sandwich footers.  I had to re-think and re-tooled all my footers transitioning from the Bel Canto Ref 1K to this unit.  Vibrapods, sorbathane would smooth things out be a great place to start.  Personally, I have the MCH3SE-C7 (multi-channel equivalent to the Ref 9V2 SE).  I like the sound much better than the Bel Canto Ref 1K it replaced for both two-channel and HT application.

For me, the best footers so far is the Finite Elemente Ceraballs--details and smoothness ($175 via Audigon).  I have heard that Equarack works even better but at almost twice the price (around $300 via Audiogon).   Also, interconnects that's silver-based can throw off the balance in my experience and makes the sound leaner than neutral.  I recommend a good copper wire with ever-slight leaning to the warmish side of neutral to give the Nuforce bloom and smoothness.  Thus far, I have no issue with RFI, EMI interaction with my other gears.  Properly set up, this unit will give you a sonic picture not easily found elsewhere especially at this price point.  Enjoy and report back your impressions and experience.

Kenobi

I found decent mains cables were more important than isolation.  Don't put them anywhere near a tuner - mine murdered my FM tuner signal.

Try the amps both in phase with the speakers and out of phase.  Some people prefer them out of phase.

I would always recommend that anyone with a 9.02 upgrades to V2.  The difference is huge and it gets rid of RFI problems that the amps have.  I just can't recommend this strongly enough.

For speaker cables - make sure that they are as heavily shielded as you can possibly get.  Much of the RFI seems to be broadcast from the speaker cables and shielding makes a big difference to other components.

Timothy , I see you recommend Chord speaker cables.

I shall try to borrow some Chord and Transparent cable to compare.
