Labels / Decals for front panels
« on: 2 Jan 2008, 03:19 pm »
I just built a speed controller for my turntable (aka Mark Kelly) and need some labels for the front panel. You know, the basics like numbers ("33", "45" "On", "Off", "Power"). Antique Electronic Supply used to sell them but they are out of stock with no idea when they will resuply.

My case is black, so I need white letters or decals to stick on. Anyone have a source or an idea? I guess I could print some black on white letters on a basic adhesive back label and cut it out, but I was hoping for something that looks a little more professional.

Thanks,
Bob

What's the case made of and what's the finish on it?

It's your basic black steel box. Here's a picture.

I am interested too, but I don't have a clue as to the solution.

I was looking around for a stencil, but didn't have much luck finding what I wanted.  I wanted to draw, with pencil & stencil, lettering onto my preamp face (all wood) and then burn it with a burning kit.  Still need to find a good stencil.  I know that that is different than yours as mine is wood, but was thinking you could use a small stencil to paint lettering onto your fascia (sic).

Searching over at www.DIYAudio.com I find the best method for me is probably going to Pearl Paint (or some other art store) and buying some white dry stencil transfer lettering, applying it as I need to, then lacquering over the face plate so it doesn't scrape off with wear. I think the popular kit names are Letraset or Chatpak.

For a wood faceplate I would think you could use black lettering. Burning it in with a wood burning kit might look nice, but I don't trust myself to do it neatly either.

Enjoy,
Bob

Ah, ok.

I was going to suggest lasering it, but with a steel box, I don't think that would work out so well. I'll call my laser guy and see what he thinks.
