Cambridge 840C?
« on: 22 Sep 2007, 05:22 am »
Anyone have experience with this player?  Reviews are excellent (TAS loved it), but I'm wondering if anyone has used one as a DAC for a squeezebox or AppleTV (planning a temporary move and don't want to transport  700 CDs, but do want a proper player for CD purchase made over that period of time).  Its internal DA seems quite impressive on paper, but I likely wouldn't have a chance to listen to one before purchase.  I'm at least hoping it would blow away my beloved 10 year old Denon 1650AR.

Thanks! :thumb:

I had a cambridge 640C and sold it to upgrade to a Raysonic 128 . The Raysonic is much much better!  aa I believe it would beat the 840 as well and probably not cost as much.  :thumb:

I've tried 2 different dealers who sell this unit and neither will even order one without payment - no refunds...  I would love to hear one as well.  I would use it both as a stand alone player and as a DAC for a squeezebox, but without an audition, no way I'll take the risk.  Once again, local dealers stink up the place.

I recently ordered one from Spearitsound.com and they also have a return policy although not as long as AudioAdvisor.  Both offer free shipping as well.   Both sell it for $1375.

Thanks for the replies!  I ultimately might just try one from audioadvisor -- perhaps a demo-priced unit will show up for sale so I can save $200.  The Raysonic looks quite interesting, but I'm trying to avoid tubes -- I already have far too many in my system to worry about.  Just judging by parts, the 840C should be a giant step up from the 640C.

And, mdconnelly: Please let me know what you think of it!   aa

My motivation on the 840c is because my Wadia 830 does not have digital outs.   I now have an Aberdeen modded Tact 2.0s with A/D and D/A boards.   I love the Tact,  but feel that having the Wadia do a double D-A-D-A dance can't be a good thing.  Given the 840c's ability to upsample to 24/192 on digital out which matches what the Tact accepts and operates at, I thought I'd give it a shot, particularly given all the hype.

Only had it for a couple days so I'm just burning it in now and haven't given it a serious listen.   Out of the box, it seemed a bit edgy (to be expected on new equipment) yet had excellent dynamics and a big soundstage.  But truthfully, that's based on maybe 20 minutes initial listening just to make sure it worked when it arrived.   My plan is to spend a lot of time next weekend doing some critical listening.   I'll be sure to post...

To save retyping I commented a tad about this player on the Apsen Circle.

What intrigues me about the 840C, is the digital out/in feature.  Now I'd have one box (with hopeful transport and DAC optimized to work with each other) and can still insert my Berhinger DEQ2406 while in the digital realm.
