I read the Bellari site a while back....the preamp had a very low-ish 30db gain (most moving coil stages are 36db+).

So, the pre-amp may not be bad, per se, just no oomph for many medium-to-low gain systems or inefficent speakers pairings in large rooms. The unit was originally a DJ piece...perhaps because DJ cartriges tend to be much higher gain than audiophool oriented cartridges, perhaps the gain on DJ phono pre-amps, or maybe just this Bellari, is on the low side for audiophool use.

My tube amps are very low gain (it keeps tube noise minimized that way) and this Bellari likely would be a horrible match for my sytem.

I'd likely have it listed on Audiogon in days....for no other reason but gain issue.

Regards - young fella'....John

Clay W:

I too have read that the Bellari is very good. However about once a week there is  one for sale on Audiogon.
That kind of tells me that the Bellari isn't all it's cracked up to be. Guys try it and don't like it so off to Audiogon it goes.

                                        Cheers
                                       Charlie

"Right now I'm pleased with what I'm hearing....."

What else is there, Charlie?  Set it and forget it is nirvana.

My phono pre is a cheapo I bought on ebay. I'm looking at a Cambridge audio 640P phono pre. Got some very good reviews. Have you heard about this one my son? Or any suggestions?

Charlie,

I've got the Cambridge 640p phono stage in use with a Dual 601 belt drive TT and Shure V15 type III cartridge and am pleased with the results.  The Cambridge is smooth and detailed, yet lacking just a little in the top end, IMO.  It also mates well with the Audio Technica 440 MLa cartridge I am using, so it works well with the MM carts I have tried.  For under $200 new, I haven't heard better.  It even includes a rumble filter, which I don't use much, but can help with those "noisy" LPs.  The Graham Slee Gram Amp 2SE is a LITTLE better overall, but at less than half the price of the Graham Slee, I'm happy with the Cambridge Audio 640p for my budget vinyl set up.
