Upgrading the Cornet
« on: 1 Nov 2007, 01:58 am »
I'm just putting this post up for information purposes for us Hagophiles.

I have just finished installing some caps in the base Cornet (the blue one) for a good friend of mine and was quite impressed with the better sonic performance.  Here is what I did:

installed some small ERO 0.47uF film bypass caps on the 47uF electros,

replaced the 0.47uF/0.1uf/0.047uF film caps with Obbligato film caps sourced from DIY Hifi Supply in Hong Kong,

some extra dampening to the case and silver wire on the output/input RCA sockets.

I found this really improved the soundstage and made a huge improvement to the dynamics.  The cost was quite small as I already had the ERO caps, dampening and silver wire and the Obbligatos are very good value indeed and I feel are at least as good as Mundorf Supremes and way cheaper.  DIYHFS are always professional, fast and cheap, can't ask more than that, same as Jim really!

Cheers

Hi Bluesky,

Thank you very much for modifying the cornet phonostage for me.  I'll post my impressions of the improvements that your modification has brought to the phonostage and my listening impressions.  Now I just have to fix that damn hum and I'll be really happy.  The hum is a system issue as I have had this problem with about 5 phonostages and only the musical fidelity xlps didn't have hum issues but sounded very average imo.

Regards

Rod

ps your a true gentleman for helping me out.

Hi Rod

It was the least I could do for a good mate!  As you know I have included a couple of filters, some copies of Douglas Self's words of wisdom and if that doesn't work Jim and I will just have to fly out to Perth to work it all out over a cold beer.

What do you reckon Jim, feel like a long flight to Oz to check out Rod's hum problem?

Anyway Rod, you know how to contact me and I enjoy building stuff so its certainly not a chore for me.  We'll sort this hum problem out one way or another.  I'm wondering Rod, does the Musical Fidelity have balanced outputs?  I have a set of transmitter/receiver PCB's that I can build up if all else fails.

Hi Ian,

I borrowed the musical fidelity from a friend of mine but I believe it wasn't balanced.  I have a sneaky feeling that the problem may be my n.e.w. preamp.  I'll try and borrow another preamp to find out whether that is the problem.

Hi Roger

Is this the device you're talking about:

It is often used in automotive applications.

Thanks

Hello Ian
That's the one, put it between my diy class a  power amp from altronics, and my bottlehead pre. I think, because my Pi speakers are very efficient I was getting a lot of noise, but this little gadget cut it right back
