Getting into this hobby... about 7 years ago...
Highly influenced by my Dad, who had at the time dual M&K MX125 subwoofers...
Ran into a mono LFE signal though -- was just one of the things to bring about my interest...
Such large boxes and drivers, shaking a room....
Just so happens, one of those M&K subs was my first subwoofer ---
As time went on, I learned that they sucked, very inaccurate and diluted.... but the Push Pull design was very interesting. Granted, I don't think it was implemented very well ---
Anyways, of course, SVS has been huge the past few years, I jumped on that band wagon in blind faith. For HT is answered, and for music - it did just the same, jumping in accuracy far above the M&K...
It was until I jumped into higher resolution components and gained a little better budget did I start to branch my wings....
After much conversing with my audio enthusiast buddies throughout the states....
Several subwoofer manufactures popped up from all sources
Martin Logan, VMPS, REL, SVS and Velodyne...
I've always been a fan of BIG subwoofers, so ML, REL, and Velo pretty much were totally disqualified from day one.....
However SVS and VMPS were definitely at a tie...
Obviously, since I am here - VMPS won...
With low compliance drivers, a sealed, heavy duty, inert enclosure, and a push pull configuration...
The Larger Subwoofer has gotta be one of the most accurate, textured, and full sounding subwoofers I've ever heard...
It is a testament to their ability at how seamlessly I have been able to blend them in my small room...
They don't have quite the extention I thought they did -- so I crossed them over at 20hz to prevent the ocasional bottoming out...
But for music, they delivered... I had a audio pal come over a week or so ago, and he constantly asked if the subs were on... again, just quick, smooth, textured, very easy to blend in - even in my small room...
I will probally get a SVS for movies down the road, but VMPS is definitely here to stay with the music portion...
Definitely recomend the Larger subwoofer --- and the kit is very fun to put together...
