I thought I've seen all the tube tweeks - but then I found this one...

Oil damped tubes :o  What a potential mess this one is...I'll pass on this (even tho the cost is attractive)

ROFL!  I'm visualizing YouTube videos showing the mess and associated cleanup.  I also shudder to think if one of these failed in my house.  I might be thrown out having finally broken the camel's back.   :P

And I'm thinking - olive oil?  What about when it goes rancid?  Best to stick to mineral oil if you're going to try something like this.  It's also non-conductive, so if it leaks there won't be a short - I'm not sure about other oils.

I think here in Cali we're obligated to use Avocado oil

some young guy

this could be good for that fondue party we've been thinking about... mmmmmm twin triode steak bites!

And I thought oil filled caps could get messy :)

Wait, this could be a marketing opportunity..wonder if this guy patented it yet

If the tubes run hot enough, you could probably use it for deep frying snacks while listening to music.

It could get interesting if the tube raises the oil past it's smoke point

Looks like a recipe for disaster.

Gives a whole new meaning to extra virgin tubes!

Would you like fries with your smoked tubes?
Hey; it might sound great, but I'd NEVER try it!

In my tube amp days.....I had a pair of Manley LAB100 monoblocks. The pots were inside the chassis and you needed a long, #1 flat head screwdriver to adjust them. I picked up a new octet for the children and proceeded to bias them one evening as a project.

I got to the second to last tube, second amp, and while biasing turned it the wrong way and watched the tube, and subsequent amp, blow up in front of me. It was milliseconds of tube hotness, ruby red glow and POP!. It sucked.

Tubes are cool but always respect voltage.

Hey!

Brilliant! :D  Not a bad idea I must say. But with some risk of course?

You know I do have a plastic case with water on top of my CDP right now. Have been using this for a few years now. Fluid damping system have been uses for sometime now on some of the tallest buildings around the world.

As for this damper scheme I think it could be effective as the guy say... and maybe improve the heat transfer too? :D As long as the o-ring could stand up to the heat I don't think it would be a problem. But if I were to do this I might take it another step by using high-temp silicone gasket in a tube like those used in car to bond and seal the o-ring and maybe around the tube and o-ring just in case. :D

Hmmm... you know now this is quite tempting now. Now I don't think I could get this off my mind when I look at those 6EM7 tube on top of my amps now.  :duh:

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
