If I understand correctly from the Sig 30.2 thread, the SMART module neither improves nor diminishes the sound.  This is an upgrade that provides convenience?

Yep that's right. The SMART module doesn't affect the sound at all, if I understand correctly. I am starting to understand just how big of an innovation the SMART module is for Vinnie. The greatest drawback to battery powered devices like this is that people don't look after their batteries as well as they should, and as Vinnie says it only takes a single deep cycle to permanently damage the batteries. The SMART module takes away all the responsibility of looking after the batteries, it's completely fool proof.

But that's only part of the upgrade with the move to Sig. 30.2 over the Sig. 30. There are a whole host of improvements to the sound quality with the Sig. 30.2. Hope this helps and hope I'm correct!

Steve is absolutely correct!  aa

The turn-on resistance of the MOSFET used in the SMART module is actually even lower than that of the switch I was using... in theory this could lead to better sound, but with all the big improvements to the Signature 30 board, I can't tell if the SMART also have improved things unless I try to install it into a stock Sig 30 and compare it to another stock Sig 30 with the older style mechanical switch.

Also keep in mind that in time, the contacts of a mechanical switch degrade (especially with the large in-rush current when the unit is turned ON), and the resistance of the switch increases (bad for sound quality) and reliability decreases.  The SMART module does not have this problem  :)

The SMART module also disconnects the charger's GND from the battery (something that the mechanical switches of previous RWA products did not do), so there is even more isolation for potential noise.

Thanks... yes, this is HUGE for me!  8)  There is nothing out there like this. and it has taken a long time to develop but it is well worth it!  Also, just wait until you see this touch sensing switch that will be built into the front panel (totally flush and also black anodized, with the red LED built into it).  It is a custom part that is quite expensive, but again, there is nothing else like it!  Again, this switch just turns on/off the SMART module.  The actual path of current from the battery to the amp board only passes through one high-current MOSFET on the SMART board.  It is AWESOME!

I finally have all the parts in stock to start building these SMART modules, so we are getting that much closer to the Signature 30.2 and 70.2 units.  Just waiting on the enclosures now  :hyper:

And as I mentioned earlier, I am going to offer installation service of SMART modules to older RWA products (where applicable) of for custom applications (e.g. custom battery power supply with built-in SMART module that a customer wants to power a certain product).  As always, feel free to email me for details.

Best regards,

Vinnie

Vinnie, how much time are we talking here, assuming the amp is turned on and off once a day?

Thanks Steven and Vinnie.  That is very interesting.  In spite of what was previously said, it was hard for me to understand what it did but it's completely clear now.  Very cool!
