Initial thoughts and comments on the SongTowers

Guys,

No formal review yet, just some initial thoughts based on very limited listening and almost no time on the speakers.

These speakers are fast and punchy (It probably doesn't hurt that they have 450 watts per channel driving them and the amp has a dampening factor greater than 1000.)

While I am not fooled into thinking they are HT3's or my Vandy 5A's, they don't sound light in the bottom.  Listening to Rusted Root's "When I Woke" the drums, bongos, and bass, were tight, not flabby, with good definition and pitch.  There was a very solid foundation to the music and I really liked the way it "boogied".  My feet were tapping the whole time.   :D

The hi's were quite good as well.  Cymbals and triangles had a nice detailed sound without sounding etched or grainy.

I listened to Natalie Merchant's "Tigerliliy" to get an idea of how a female voice and piano sound.

The midrange was clean and clear, but was just a little shut in and not quite as open as I remember the HT3's being.  Natalie's voice was well fleshed out and had body and presence, but I would like to hear more texture and nuance.  I would expect this area to get even better with break-in.

Piano had a very solid sound to it and had good scale and size.  Nothing small or toy like here.  The leading transients were just a little bit rounded and not as sharp and detailed as I am used to, but I bet that will also improve with some time on the speakers.

Overall, I am quite impressed with the level of performance, as well as the fit and finish of the Song Towers.  In my limited time with them, they have been a pleasure to listen and kept me on the couch wanting to hear another song.   :thumb:

I believe that these speakers will work equally well in a HT or 2 channel environment.  They have plenty of bass, yet are well balanced and no one part of the audio spectrum stands out over another.

Frankly, I can't figure out how Jim is building these in the USA and selling them for under $1500 a pair.

Stay tuned for more...

George

Thanks George, I was looking forward to your comments.

I am surprised that you didn't mention the warmth of the voice,  but the 5A's have a similar warmth.

I gather that you didn't listen in you main room that has all the room correction.  Could that have played a factor?

Thanks again for your comments.

Bob,

These aren't going into the main room or using the same components as the main system - they are to be used in my HT.

I am using an ATI 1506 with a VH Audio Flavor 4 power cord connected to a Bolder Cable modified (top analog mods) SB2 + Bolder Cable modified Elpac PS, connected via VH Audio Silver NextGen Pulsars.

Also, I have no room treatments up yet and haven't been able to optimize placement.

Also, please keep in mind that these are my initial comments and my frame of reference is a much more expensive system that has had many months of tuning and tweaking.

As I said above, I think the SongTowers are good speaker and a really good value.

What exactly do you mean when you say "warmth of the voice"?  Maybe if I better understand that, I can respond to your question.

I am hoping to use our Ultimate 70 tube amplifier to run the Songtowers at the RMAF and suspect it will be an awesome musical combination.

See you there.

I bet that tubes would be sweet on the SongTowers.

While I am not going to lug around my tube mono blocks downstairs, I will have a McAlister PP-150 by the end of the week to try on the SongTowers.

When  I listened to Vandy 5A's in the store, the voice had a "bloom" that sounded great. The SongTowers have a similar bloom.  The main difference that I could hear is that the 5A's had the polypropylene sound.  There was a lot of time and space difference between the two listenings so please don't take my comments as definitive.

The ST's have been playing non-stop all week and I hope to find some time this weekend to give them a listen.

Since I am still delayed on getting some of my new HT gear (unfortunately, not everybody delivered on schedule like Jim did, I will try and hook-up the McAlister PP-150 to see how the ST's like tubes.

George,

Do you have any updates on the ST's?

Well, I have watched 3 or 4 movies with them as my L/C/R channels and I am very happy with their performance.

They dialogue was crisp and clear, without being etched or grainy in any way.

Dynamics were also quite good, with a punch to them that most people wouldn't expect from speakers with the SongTowers' profile.

I know people want to hear more about them from a 2 channel perspective, but I just haven't had much time to listen to them that way.  The brief time I tried the McAlister PP-150 on them, they produced a very pleasing sound that was well rounded and coherent from top to bottom.  The PP-150 had no problems driving them with authority, weight, and speed.

Overall, I am very happy with the SongTowers in my HT setup and think Jim has another hit on his hands.
