Projector guys...best ~$1,500 dlp projector
« on: 14 Aug 2007, 09:18 pm »
Notes....
The pj must be ceiling mountable 10-13 ft. from the screen
I have a 92 inch Da Lite 1.3 gain gray fixed screen that I really like....but would replace if needed
HDMI input is mandatory
Need 720p or 1080i I am pretty certain that 1080p is well out of reach
Would prefer 10 bit color

Thoughts?

EDS,
I don't have a specific recommendation for you, but the absolute BEST projector site I know of is called, "ProjectorCentral.com". They've got a "form" you can check boxes to select various features and it'll spit out recommended PJ's based on your wish list.

Here's the "find projector" page:

http://projectorcentral.com/projectors.cfm

Hope that helps,
Bob

Just don't take PJCentral's "reviews" seriously... seriously. How can they be objective when everything gets 5 stars?

The Optoma HD72 (or 73 if you can spend a couple hundred more), and the Mitsubishi HC3100 (import only). You can also haunt Woot.com during the next woot-off and pick up an Infocus 7210.

Actually, they don't give everything five stars and I have found their reviews to be spot on.

Read their reviews and you will see that they give very detailed and complete reviews.

If you could deal with not having an HDMI input, I can make you a very sweet deal on a Marantz VP-12S1.  It is only a 720P DLP and it is 4+ years old, but it still puts out a killer picture.  The original list price was $14k.

Ditto.

EDS, do you have a price range?

I have been living happily with the Mitsubishi HC3000 since Nov '06 and it is incredible.  It is not 1080p but I will honestly tell you that the picture I get on Bluray from my PS3 leaves me beyond satisfied.  I have looked at quite a few high ticket 1080p displays and do not feel like I am missing anything.  It is a great projector and a fabulous value.  The PS3 is an incredible device and does a wonderful job upscaling standard definition dvds.

I use a fixed frame 106" Dalite high power screen and am able to use my projector in low lamp mode and even watch movies or sports with some ambient light.  There are many good choices out there in your price range but the Mits HC3000 was what I settled on after reading a million threads on AVS forum and many reviews on the different projector review sites.

Good luck

The new Mits '1500 is a hot contender in your range.  It's basically a brighter HD-1000U for $995.  If you can make the offset work it might be your best bet.  If my Barco 701 doesn't work out I'll probably pick one up myself.

As mentioned the Mits are very hot.  One of my distributors now offers them and I had one of each last week.

1080p however will be around 2 x that. (the 5000)

I don't know about Projector Central.  When I started looking into projectors, I thought that Projector Central was great.  Now, I'm not so sure.  For instance, when they examined the JVC RS1, they have it a value of brightness that was around 200 lumens less than the brightness by basically every other reviewer.  Then they placed it in the middle of the pack for 1080p projectors, whereas basically everyone else (read projectorreviews for instance) placed it at the top of the pack.

Also, if you read the reviews carefully, you'll see where they call one projector producing X lumens in best mode a "bright" projector yet another projector that produces >X or only slight less than X lumens in best mode not bright enough.  It's not logical.

You might want to check out the "Display Devices" "Under $3000" submenus at Audio Visual Science forum (http://www.avsforum.com/) (no affiliation).  Useful insights from actual owners.
